~The Third Aett - Tyr's Aett

-Contains names of 2 German gods, Tyr (Tiwaz) and Ingwaz, as runes
-this aett associates with ideas and concepts
-Magically, these runes are used more spiritually, psychologically, and emotionally

~Tiwaz
-Standard form: ᛏ
-gets name from German god of law and reason Tyr
-we have Tuesday "tiw's day"
-represents what's right and fair
-Merkstave: Injustice, imbalance, irrationality
-Inscribed on weapons like Excalibur and Gryffindor's sword, can only be wielded by those who are just and fair
-Used by Aurors and those in Law to stay unbiased

~Berkano
-Standard form: ᛒ
-Muggle: "birch tree"
-rune of family, birth, and happiness (literal and otherwise)
-Merkstave: Strife, infertility, stagnation
-midwives carve the rune onto tools
-May promote fertility in potions
-rarely used merkstave
-suggested that Voldemort's Horcrux had merkstave Berkano carved on it

~Ehwaz
-Standard form: ᛖ
-Muggle: horse
-Schreiber: teamwork, transportation, partnership
-strength comes from bond of caster
-Merkstave: recklessness, discord, unwillingness to work together
-used with Vikings for helping prisoners work together
-also carved into saddles

~Mannaz
-Standard form: ᛗ
-rune of humankind, represents everything- creation and destruction
-Upright it represents the best of humans, merkstave represents the worst
-will tell what's in your soul
-often carved into talismans for intelligence and reason

~Laguz
-Standard form: ᛚ
-Muggle: Water, sea
-Schreiber: Unknown, subconscious, profound - deeper meaning
-Merkstave: Madness, fear
-useful in truth-seeking charms/amulets
-helpful in healing
-also good for discovering hidden talent

~Ingwaz
-Standard form: ᛜ
-Named after god Ingwaz, who represents fertility, plenty, peace
-Stands for the hero
-Schreiber: Common sense, healing, relaxation, caring
-rune of hard work, fair play
-Merkstave: Sloth, unfairness
-a favorite of Hufflepuffs
-often used on tools requiring hard work, like hammers

~Dagaz
-Standard form: ᛞ
-Muggle: Day, dag, tag
-Schreiber: Clarity, breakthrough, balance
-Merkstave: Ending, completion, hopelessness, blindness
-encourages creative thinking and good for memory charms
-Rowena used in the Common Room

~Othala
-Standard form: ᛟ
-birthplace, heritage, tradition
-signifies community, homeland
-Merkstave: intolerance, prejudice, clannishness, unwillingness to help others
-used in large communities, draws on shared strength

~Vocab

-Ingwaz: Norse Earth god
-Tyr/Tiwaz: Norse god of justice, reason, leadership, and neutrality
