Lesson 5: Runes 9-16: Heimdall's Aett

Chapter 5
~Intro

-Midterm today!
-Heimdall's Aett is named after the god Heimdall, associated with Hagalaz. These runes represent the forces of nature and the life cycle.

~Hagalaz
-Standard Form: ᚻ
- No true merkstave position
-Muggle interpretation "hail"
-Schreiber: Forces of nature (weather, humankind, time, etc)
-Merkstave: Natural disaster, turbulent mind, chaos
-Most often used in weather magic
-Used with Fehu for childbirth and natural illness

~Naudiz
-Standard Form: ᚾ
-Muggle interpretation "need"
-Schreiber: Necessity, physical need, survival (basic will to live)
-Merkstave: Deprivation and death
-Associated with sacrificial ritual of the past

~Isa
-Standard Form: ᛁ
-Muggle interpretation "ice and blockage"
-Schreiber: Obstruction, delay, challenge, stagnation (can also include bias)
-Usually used negatively
-May be written to convey a warning
-Merkstave: None
-Encourages caution, a clear head, and a bit of expertise
-In a text by Norse magi, Ingridr Sigurðardóttir, Isa is used to speak of obstacles put up by certain male members of the Magi Council who opposed her introduction

~Jera
-Standard Form: ᛋ (variant)
-Harvest, seasons, cycle of life/death.
-No positive or negative as it represents both good and bad sides of the life cycle
-Merkstave: None
-Proverbial double-edged sword
-Enhances all life-giving and withering spells
-Never carve runes into your own wand, but some theorize that the Elder Wand had Jera carved into it.

~Eihwaz
-Standard Form: ᛇ
-Life and death, associated with a yew tree
-May be used in context of passing from old life into new life
-Merkstave: Destruction and weakness
-Protects one's life, likely at another's expense.
-The greater the sacrifice; the greater the protection
-Used in conjunction with Naudiz
-Carved into warrior's weapons (possibly made of yew) for strength and resilience

-Literal: "dice" "womb"
-Magical: Luck, femininity, fate
-Femininity: "Feminine mysteries" (twilight, the Moon, etc) or life and birth
-May be used to mark the birth of a child, the beginning of a new season, the full moon, or a female magi or priestess
-May be used to connote luck or fate potions, such as Felix Felicis
-Merkstave: Dullness, degradation, bad luck, ill-fortune
-Used positively to increase moon effects and luck/happiness potions

~Algiz

-Protection, strength, guardianship
-Literal: "Elk"
-Can protect a spellcaster physically and mentally
-Merkstave: Danger, trouble
-Used to refer to some sort of protection or defense
-Often paired with Solwilo (victory rune) with soldiers

-Core: "Sun"
-Schreiber: victory, power, masculinity, good health, and clarity of thought.
-Merkstave: Defeat, darkness
-Success or wellbeing - helps the success of a spell or potion
-good for complicated magic in Charms and Transfiguration
-Thor is said to watch over this rune
-Carved on gravestones of fallen soldiers and weapons

~Vocabulary

-Heimdall: Norse god who guards the roads of the universe.
-Ingridr Sigurðardóttir: a female Nordic magi, creator of many ligatures.
