Invention?
Chapter 4
I opened the umbrella under the cover of my pavilion right outside the house, and then I walked onto the sidewalk, squinting my eyes hopefully. Yes! The umbrella held up nicely and the jelly, which was only the size of a small pin tack, just slid off the umbrella. I started walking down the sidewalk toward the supermarket.
Huh. Maybe this isn’t so bad! I thought. It seemed that as soon as I thought that, the jelly doubled in size. And then they tripled. I screamed and ran for cover. The jelly became the size of golf balls! My umbrella started to rip in places, and a big blob of jelly fell on my head. I ran as fast as I could, splattering my shoes and legs with liquified jelly rain that sat in puddles on the road.
I reached my house, opened the door, and bolted inside immediately. Then I shut the door, locked it, and put my back flat against it, as if that would help it somehow stop.
“Arghhh! How am I supposed to get this stuff done if I’m just going to get showered with jelly?” I muttered angrily.
I kicked off my boots and attempted to get some jelly bits off of my head where they exploded. I sat down in a chair by the kitchen and sighed, a long, deep sigh, exhausted.
I put my head in my hands and tried to rethink the situation.
What if I… make my own umbrella? I could make my own umbrella… a stronger one.
“OMG! I could make my own umbrella! YES! I COULD MAKE MY OWN UMBRELLA!!” I exclaimed gleefully.
That would solve all my problems nicely! Except… I don’t have much time. I am early… let’s see… at best, I have only about thirty minutes to make one jelly-resistant, strong umbrella!
I figured that I had no time to lose, so I got to work immediately. I was an inventor, a creator, an innovator, so I was equipped with everything I needed to make this work!
I raced back up to my room, taking the stairs by two at a time. I skimmed through the books on my large bookshelf and finally found the one I was looking for: The Secret Garden. I took the book out, and behind it was a lever. I grinned and pulled the lever down.
Suddenly, a secret passageway opened up, and I smiled slightly.
“Time to get the show on the road!” I said, smiling.
