Chapter 2
When Andra awoke, she had a feeling she forgot something. When she saw everyone else already up, she realized she forgot to set her alarm! But there was something else she forgot. What was it? “Look! Andra has a book!” a boy shouted. Heads turned Andra’s way. Marie woke up. “Wait what’s happening?” she asked. The teacher went up to Andra. “Andra, are you a reader, or a thespian?’ Andra hung her head. “A thespian.” She replied.
“Then you know that reading is a very serious offense. It’s another hobby. I am afraid I have no choice but to send you to the Principal’s office.” Marie walked over. “You’re not scared!” Marie retorted. “Miss Marie-” the teacher began. “It was me!” Marie yelled. “I did it! I was reading last night!” Andra was in complete shock. “Marie!” she yelled. She couldn’t let her take the blame for something Andra had done. Marie looked at her. Andra could see the pain in her eyes. “Andra, I know I promised you that I wouldn’t go too far but I have to now. I need to do this for you.” Marie grabbed Andra’s hand. Andra was crying now. “Miss Marie, your performance was very touching, but I need to do my job. You need to go to the Principal’s office.” the teacher informed Marie. Marie looked the teacher in the eyes. She squeezed Andra’s hand, took a deep breath, and said the word that changed everything. “No!” Everyone was silent. Marie hugged her sister, and Andra hugged her back and they both cried. The Guards came in for Marie. They started taking her away to the Principal’s office. Andra tried to get to Marie, but she was held back. When Marie was finally taken away, Andra fell to the ground sobbing. Everyone stared at her. Then the boy who yelled about the book said, “Sorry Andra,” and left. Everyone else did the same and put away their sleeping bags. It was like it never happened. The only one who really cared was a girl named Savhanna, but even she could not truly understand how Andra felt. After a few hours, Andra felt almost ok. Marie was smart and brave. She went to detention Five times. If anyone was not going to go crazy seeing the Principal, it would be Marie. As the day went on Andra was getting more confident in her sister. And at the end of the day, she was excited. She will see Marie tomorrow! She was proud that her sister would be the one who would not go crazy. Andra was so excited that she didn’t even bother thinking about books. When the announcements came on, however, they displayed a different message than usual. All Students are to come outside just past the doorway, and no farther. Everyone was talking about what was going on as they went outside. When they got outside, they saw some guards, The Vice Principal, The Board of Directors, and Marie’s crumpled, bloody body.
