Salazard Slythrin
Chapter 4
Salazar Slytherin, founder and professor of Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft, is a pureblood wizard who lived during medieval times. He is known to be one of the founders of Hogwarts and gave his name to one of the school's four houses.
Slytherin had the ability to speak to the serpent, the Parseltongue, which made him very famous and gave him the nickname "snake tongue", hence the choice of the snake as a symbol of his house.
The Parseltongue is a rare gift associated with the black magic that certain wizards have of which it is one of the first identified.
Slytherin is thus considered as one of the greatest magicians of his time, with the other three founders (see chapter 1, 2 and 3), having vast magical capacities, he would have moreover been in his time a legitimately accomplished.
A staunch supporter of the Thoroughbred sorcerer supremacy, Slytherin believed that only wizards and witches from a wizarding line should be allowed to Hogwarts, not trusting the Muggle-born students. He had an argument on this subject with Godric Gryffindor, a founding comrade of whom he was a friend as well as with the other founders who did not agree. He finally left school and never came back.
But there was a legend that Slytherin, before leaving school, built a secret room hidden somewhere inside Hogwarts, which only his real heir could access. This room, called the Chamber of Secrets, hid a monster that would complete its "noble task": to rid Hogwarts of Muggle students.
Slytherin had great determination and was very cunning, qualities that are valued among the students of his house. To achieve his ends, he was capable of anything. He built the Chamber of Secrets where he hid a basil to "purge" Hogwarts of Muggle children, despite the fact that the other founders disagreed with his beliefs. The Chamber of Secrets is so skillfully constructed and protected that it has been impossible to find scholars and other wizards for nearly a thousand years.
During the Distribution of students to integrate Slytherin, the Sorting Hat looks for the traits that Slytherin appreciated in its students: cunning, determination and a certain contempt for regulation.
During 1993 - 1994, a portrait of Salazar Slytherin kept a secret passage from Hogwarts leading from the entrance hall to the dungeons: the password to access it was "Deadly dread".
