1 - Stand Alone
Chapter 1
My life at Cokeworth was very happy until I was 2 or 3. I had a loving mother, a doting father that would come and go with his work and his snake that would play in a wonderful manner with me in the study. Many people, death eaters mainly, used to come to our house but my father always came alone. I understand now that he had bought a place in Knockturn Alley and given it to my mother in order for her to move into.
As a house my mother and uncle had lived there as children. It was not a great place the town was an old industrial town with the dirtiest canal where boats would take goods to the factories. There was a common and you could go there. It was a great place for Mooncalves. The house itself was in a terrace of houses close to a small passage-way. There were two rooms downstairs, the kitchen and study/lounge and upstairs there were two bedrooms and a bathroom. It was a standard house of the area. I don’t believe there were any other wizarding families around, they were all muggles. An interesting fact about our house is that you were able to look down the stairs but never up.
In the winter of 1980/1981, I was with my mother in Cokeworth, my uncle was at this time working with the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters, it must have been a very tricky time. I was upstairs and I saw a man with my mother, I remember green lights and screaming. Not much else. I went cautiously downstairs with my teddy. I knew that there was magic that made people cold and stiff. I honestly thought she would wake up, so I crawled into her arms and went to sleep, waiting for her to wake up. As siblings they were not very close but I know that my uncle protected everyone he loved including his sister and me.
It was the next day when I was woken up by the front door and my Uncle Severus storming in. He was furious, shouting at her, I think. He then saw the mess in the room I think it was only then that he understood. I remember him pulling me away and hugging me tightly. There is only one other time in my life when I have needed a hug so intense. I don’t know what he did with her body and I don’t want to know all I remember is his look of shock on his face. He sent me straight upstairs to get my things. I never saw her again. I didn’t even understand that she was dead. He told me years later that he made a vow to her that he would protect me no matter what.
I don’t know what my father was told about my mother’s death either. I don’t know if he thought I was dead too or whether he knew I was alive. All I know is that he went on a major killing rampage after her death which took the life of many of the parents of my future friends including the Longbottoms and the Potters. Could this have been because he thought I was dead as well? Sometimes part of me wants to believe that but I don’t believe it in the slightest. I think you all know that my Uncle Severus asked Albus Dumbledore to put the Potters into hiding simply because of his love for Lily Potter. I suppose he thought we were safe, but we were not.
