What Is A Hippogriff?
Chapter 3
What is a Hippogriff?
The Hippogriff is a magical creature resembling a winged horse with the upper head and body of an eagle.
Hippogriffs have cruel, steel-colored beaks and brilliant orange eyes. The talons on their front legs are half a foot
long and appear deadly. Hippogriff Breeding is a well-established career, with notable breeders such as Newton
Scamander's Mother. The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures gave the Hippogriff a
M.O.M Classification of XXX, meaning that a competent wizard should be able to cope with them. Newt
Scamander's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" describes how eye contact should be held when
approaching a hippogriff. Bowing also shows good intentions. If the Hippogriff returns the greeting, it is safe to
approach.
