Chapter 9
It turns out that there weren’t a lot of campers at the camp yet, because it wasn’t quite summer yet, and most only came after school ended. Of course, this led to the question of what I was going to do with my parents worrying about me, and needless to say, that was awkward.
Chiron told me that the campers were just about to play capture the flag in the woods, and that he needed to get over there to start the game. He then stepped out of the wheelchair; and when I say stepped out, I mean he stood up, and stepped out, on horse legs. I mean, if monsters and gods exist, why not centaurs too?
We walked over to the woods, where a group of roughly 20 campers was standing. When they saw Chiron approaching, a girl with hair the colour of dark chocolate and brown eyes ran toward him.
“Chiron!” she said to him, giving the other campers an angry look. “We have 19 people, and Ben keeps saying that we need to have 9 on each side for ‘balance’. So they want me to sit out. Tell them that-” she broke off when she noticed me and Jake. “Oh, well, since Jake is back, he can join and we’ll have an even number of people.”
Jake looked at Chiron. “I guess I can join then,” he said, then looked at me. “If you don’t mind.”
“Why would I mind?” I asked. He shrugged, and started putting on armour that he probably just carried around with him in his backpack all the time.
The girl that had been mad at all the other campers before looked at me and stuck her hand out. “The name’s Cressida, Cress for short,” she said as I shook her hand. “Daughter of Hemera, the goddess of day. And you are…?”
“I’m Evie,” I told her. “I’m not sure who my godly parent is though, but Jake said that I’ll probably be claimed soon…” I trailed off, not sure how that was gonna happen.
It turned out that this version of capture the flag was quite different from the one I was familiar with; it included the use of swords, and the occasional fight with one of the many monsters that lived in the woods. Chiron decided that I shouldn’t take part just yet, since I had just gotten to the camp, and I was also tired from all that had happened today. The game lasted for about an hour or so, but in the end, the side that Jake and Cress were on won. All the campers headed off to their cabins, which depended on who their godly parents were; and Chiron told me that because Hermes was the god of travelers, it was customary for the new campers who hadn’t been claimed yet to stay there.
