Chapter 44
“I’m worried about Evie,” said Jake. “Something happened. Something big.”
I imagined Cress shrugging, a thoughtful frown on her face. “There’s no point pressuring her about it though. She’ll tell us at some point, I’m sure. Evie isn’t going to keep something from us for too long.”
Guilt flooded my mind; Cress trusted me, but I didn’t trust her enough to tell her that I was a child of Death. I could tell by Jake’s silence that he was thinking of the same thing.
“It’s almost like…” Jake trailed off. “Almost like she’s scared of us. But what could they have shown her?”
“Jake.” Cress’s tone was stern, reprimanding even. “I know you’re worried about her and all, but she would have told us if it was something really important. We don’t have a right to pry into her secrets. Evie will tell us when she’s ready to, not before. And besides, we should focus on the quest. I think it’s about time we get out of this Labyrinth.”
Now that Cress mentioned it, I realized she was right. I had a feeling that we should get back to the surface, back to the real world. The Labyrinth would only use our continued presence here to play with our minds.
On this happy thought, I realized that listening to Cress and Jake had helped. I couldn’t stop the nightmares; but there was no point lying awake, scared of them coming. I sighed inwardly, and felt myself slip away into a dream.
Author's Note: Sorry this chapter is short! Next week's chapter will be longer, I promise :)
