They were right

Chapter 42
I’m not sure how much longer I was there, alone; all I could think of was that they were right, they were right, they were always right… It is my fault, it always was. My fault my mom wasn’t there, my fault my dad was how he was, my fault for everything. The only thing I did, wherever I went, was get in the way. I was useless.

A pair of approaching footsteps jolted me out of my trance-like state, and I looked up. I sighed in relief; Jake and Cress were coming towards me.

“Jake! Cress!” I jumped to my feet and ran towards them. “How did you get here? Is there a way to get out?”

I reached to hug them, but they didn’t smile or laugh. They stood there, as still as statues.

“Evie.” said Cress, turning towards me. “We don’t want you to come with us any farther. You can’t do enough, don’t know enough, to be with us in the Labyrinth, and wherever the quest will take us.”

“But the prophecy says that I’m supposed to lead the quest!” I felt my voice rise. “The child o-” I barely managed to catch myself and remember how I had changed the prophecy. “The one unclaimed! That’s me!”

Jake shrugged. “Evie, you’re just not good enough. You’ll only be a liability to us. Go back to Camp Half-Blood. You’re not a real demigod; you never had any training, but you can fight just as well as I can? You knew so much about Greek mythology and saw so many weird things, but the monsters never went after you before the harpies? It doesn’t make sense.”

And there it was. The question I didn’t want to think about, the thing I didn’t want to face; why? Why do I know how to fight when I’d never done it in my life? Why had I not been attacked before? And why had my mom been ignored for such a long time before she was killed?

“And what?” I whispered, hardly daring to speak. “What does that mean?”

“It means that we don’t want you with us,” said Cress, and Jake added: “You’re not like us Evie. You’re different. And we don’t want to have anything to do with you.”
