Drowning in the dark
Chapter 40
The darkness was all around me, cutting off my sight and choking me. I grabbed at my throat, suddenly unable to breath. Some back part of my ADHD brain wondered if this was how it felt to drown, except without the wetness. Suddenly, there was a click, and a faint light turned on above me, warding off the stifling blackness. I fell to my knees, gasping, breathing in the air. When I caught my breath, I stood up and looked around, but there wasn't much to see; the void seemed to stretch on and on, never ending. Perhaps it was a room, and the walls were just outside the reaches of the scant light that allowed me to see, but something told me that that wasn't it. I had a feeling as if I was no longer a being, a person; I had been turned into a mere thought, and nothing I did would have any impact on what was around me.
"Hello?" I called out. My voice echoed, repeating that one word a thousand times, carrying the sound to the edges of the void, if those even existed. A thread of panic rose up in me, making me ask myself if I would be trapped here forever, with no way back to the real world; but I stamped it down. That was the work of Deimos, no doubt. I had never really asked myself what my worst fear was; so was it this? Loneliness?
But it became clear that that wasn't it when a sound rang out from the darkness behind me; I wasn’t alone. I had never been particularly scared of the dark, but now I understood why some people are. The noise wasn't anything specific, and it was rather hard to describe; but whatever it was, it made the blood in my veins run cold. Slowly, dreading what I would see, I turned around.
Author's Note: I'm really sorry that I didn't add the past several weeks... I left HiH for a little bit, and I also just didn't have a lot of time. I will try to update this every Saturday, though I can't promise anything.
