A job well done

Chapter 37
The lake wasn’t very wide, about 100 meters at most, so it didn’t take a long time to go around it. We had decided to split up, as much as that was possible, and go around on opposite sides. Cress had insisted that we would meet up in the middle and that she could handle half the birds by herself anyways, so she had taken the right flank; which left me and Jake to take the left. And considering that Jake was still mad at me for snapping at him earlier, and deciding that we should go in without a plan, the atmosphere was awkward, to say the least.

As we neared the birds, I decided to speak up. “Hey, I’m sorry about snapping at you earlier today,” I whispered. “I mean, I know I should tell Cress, but…” I trailed off.

“Yeah, whatever,” muttered Jake. He didn’t meet my eyes.

I sighed silently. “Maybe he’ll come around later,” I thought. “He can’t stay mad forever, right?”

My musings about Jake, however, were soon interrupted. One of the birds raised its head, and looked straight at me.”Dinner,” its eyes seemed to say. Before I could throw my knife to stop it, it cawed loudly, and the rest of the birds looked up. One by one, they spread their wings and took to the air, flying straight towards me and Jake. Soon, there was a giant black mass travelling towards us at an alarming rate.

“Oh come on!” Cress’s yell reached me from across the lake. “Why don’t I get to fight any of the blood-thirsty, flesh-eating monsters? What sort of fairness is that?” Which, of course, made some of the birds redirect their course towards her; but the bulk of the birds flew towards us.

“Oh gods, this isn’t good!” Jake’s voice rose to a yell. “This isn’t good at all!”

“Jee, thanks!” I retorted, my voice full of sarcasm. “I never would’ve guessed, Sherlock!”

He rolled his eyes, but didn’t get a chance to reply, because at that point, the birds were upon us. Without thinking about it, I drew my Celestial Bronze dagger, and slashed at the first bird. It crumbled into dust; but yet another bird took its place. However, my move gave Jake time to get his sword out.

After that, I sort of went on autopilot. Honestly, I can’t remember much of the battle, other than alternatively stabbing with my long dagger, throwing my Stygian Iron knives and having them zoom back to my hand several seconds later, and occasionally seeing Cress or Jake whirling and slashing at the birds. It was good to know that they had my back.

The battle ended quickly. I cut down the last Stymphalian bird, and looked at my friends. Like them, I was breathing heavily, as if I had just run a mile; but, oddly enough, I didn’t feel that tired. A disturbing thought came to me: what if the death of the monsters had... energized me? I quickly got rid of the idea though, because it served no purpose other than to freak me out.

“Well,” said Jake, leaning down to wipe his sword blade on the grass, “this seems like a job well done.”

Author's Note: So, for any of my regular readers (if I have any....), I'm sorry for not updating last week, and also for the really late update yesterday. I've started writing a new book, called Lost in the Ashes (not related to Percy Jackson this time), and I've also just become a little busier in my real life recently. I'll still try to update every day, but that might not happen.
