Chapter 35
A couple hours later, I deemed that it was time for us to set off. I woke up Cress, and told her to go wake up Jake. I didn’t feel like talking to him just yet. I felt kind of guilty for snapping at him yesterday, because he was kind of right; but he shouldn’t push me to tell Cress. I’ll tell her when I’m ready…
We packed up our stuff, then sat down, trying to decide what to do next. I told my friends what I had concluded while on watch, and they seemed to agree.
"But that question is, what do we do now?" asked Jake. "We're still stranded on a ledge over a dark abyss…"
"I call not jumping first!" joked Cress, but neither Jake nor I were in the spirits to laugh.
Before we had a chance to say anything, however, the Labyrinth changed shape again. Our surroundings lightened, and the ledge we were standing on melted into the ground that rose up from the abyss. A lake, about half a mile maybe in diameter, came into view, and trees popped up from the ground, which was now covered in grass. Soon, we were standing in a clearing next to the lake, surrounded by a dense forest.
On the other side of the lake, a gruesome sight met our eyes. A flock of birds were gathered around a carcass on the shore. With their ragged and greasy-looking black plumage, they looked like vultures; but when one spread its wings, I saw that they were a lot bigger than vultures. As we watched, the birds tore their sharp beaks into the carcass. Within minutes, all that was left was a pile of bones.
"Oh gods…" I turned away, trying not to throw up. "What the hell are those?"
Cress turned pale, and also averted her eyes from the birds. "I'm not sure, but something about a lake and flesh-eating birds is familiar…"
