Cress and I laid down on our sleeping bags. But I couldn't fall asleep. Images of my dad flashed through my head, and for the first time since I had gotten to Camp Half-Blood, I found myself wishing that I had never left home. I wondered if my dad had noticed that I was gone, and if there were people searching for me. With a sigh, I got up, and went to sit beside Jake on the end of the ledge.
"Can't sleep?" he asked, turning his head to look at me.
"Did you really think I would be able to?" I said, shrugging. "I just… I can't make my brain quiet down." I paused for a moment. "I kept remembering what I saw..." I shuddered. The story spilled out of me, how I had seen my dad but had been unable to do anything. A long silence followed, until Jake finally spoke.
"I saw the same thing," he said, sighing. "My step-bro was there…" he was silent again. "You should tell Cress," he added.
"Tell her what?" I asked, although I already knew what he was going to say.
"About Thanatos." said Jake. "You can't hide it from her for much longer."
I bit my lip and looked down into the gloom.
Jake saw my reluctance. "Come on. You trusted me, but not her?"
"Well it's not like you gave me much choice!" I snapped, getting angry. "You and Cress are the only friends I've ever had, so forgive me for trying to not mess it up."
Jake looked at me. "Evie, I-" he started, but I didn't let him finish.
"I'm going to bed," I said, standing up and turning away. "Tell Cress to wake me up for the third watch."
