Correction: someone that DOES want to kill us
Chapter 31
I felt a shiver go down my back. I hadn't had good luck with subway trains in the past, what with getting attacked by harpies last month. And Jake and Cress didn't seem too eager to trust this guy either. Before I could say anything, however, the man looked around in distress.
"Well, what are you waiting for? They're going to be here any minute!" He exclaimed. "The Labyrinth Express has to move on. And I doubt you want to stay here and wait for them."
When we still hesitated, he rolled his eyes, and with surprising strength, pulled us on to the train. Before we had a chance to react, the doors of the train shut and it began to move.
We were in what seemed like a first class train car, with plush red velvet seats, embroidered tapestries on the wall, and golden lace curtains on the windows. Outside was simply a grey blur as the train sped through the tunnels.
"I'll leave you here to get settled in," said the man, I guess the conductor of the train. As he turned away, I'm pretty sure I saw a wicked smile spread over his face.
I turned to my friends as soon as he left. "I don't like this," I said. "This is fishy."
Jake nodded. "Let's just be on guard, okay? Don't relax."
We decided that the best course of action for the quest would be to get off this train as soon as possible, and then search for clues. Jake took a compass out of his backpack and held it in his palm; but the needle was indecisive and kept switching directions.
"So for all we know," said Cress, looking at the compass, "we could be headed in the exact wrong direction."
I was about to answer, but I was interrupted by a screech from the train car next to the one we were in. All three of us turned to face the door that led to it, and some instinct made us draw our weapons. And then, the door opened.
