I meet my dad

Chapter 29
(Warning: this chapter is a little dark...)

The room changed around us once more. The bronze gears were visible for a moment, and then disappeared. We were in what looked like (and I’m going to be frank) the Underworld. Of course, I had never seen it, but it was uncannily similar to what I’d always imagine when somebody mentioned it.

The ground I was standing on looked like soil; normal soil, other than the fact that it was coal black and nothing would ever be able to grow on it. The sky was red, like the color of blood; and in the distance and on the horizon, fires burned. Yet the most horrific part was probably the fact that I was utterly alone on this desolate plain.

“Jake? Cress!” I yelled, beginning to panic. They had been behind me seconds ago, I was sure of it; but now, there was no one there. I turned around, yelling their names, pausing every so often to hear a response; but none came.

I sank to my knees. My only friends were gone, and it was all my fault.

At first, I didn’t notice the quiet voice croaking my name, pleading for me to help. But I guess my instincts did, and I looked up. Sitting several feet away from me, was my dad. His eyes were clear for once, not clouded from over-drinking, and anguish was painted all over his face.

“Evie….” he rasped. “Help..me.” he choked on the words, as if they hurt to say. I reached out to touch him, but suddenly, he was farther away. My intuition told me that something was off, but I ignored it and ran towards my dad. But yet again, as I got closer, he was farther away. It was like the room was playing with my sense of distance.

“Dad,” I whispered, tears threatening to escape from my eyes. But then I realized. My dad was wearing the tatters of a business suit. On its own, this didn’t really stand out; but my dad had quit work 2 and a half years ago, after his parents, or my grandparents, had died (he had also gotten all of their money, but he was too overwhelmed with grief about the death of my mom and now them to do anything good with it). He hadn’t put on his business suit since then, and I saw no reason for him to do that. And that final thought broke the illusion.

We were back in the Ancient Greek Temple like room, standing in front of the golden gates. Cress and Jake were with me again; but somehow I knew, from the expressions on their faces, they had seen the same thing I had. The key we had found in the office room, however, still in Cress’s hand, had grown, and now looked as if it would perfectly fit into the golden padlock on the gates.

Jake looked at the two of us. “Guys…” he said quietly. “I wasn’t the only one that saw that, right?”

Cress interrupted him. “Let’s just get out of here.” She put the key in the padlock and turned it, and the gates opened with a small click.
