We set off

Chapter 24
After a long night, during which I could barely sleep, Jake woke me up 40 or so minutes before dawn. I sat up, confused for a moment, and then remembered; the quest. 20 min later, I met up with Jake and Cress on Half-Blood Hill.

“You guys ready?” asked Jake, looking at Cress and then me.

“Yeah!” said Cress. “Let’s go beat some monsters and find a sword!” Cress, by the way, is probably the most active and can’t-sit-still person I’ve ever met in my life. But the ADHD, as well as the dyslexia that the 3 of us all have, comes with the demigod thing. It’s reassuring to know that I can read ancient greek if I ever come across it, although the opportunity has never really arisen.

Argus, the camp’s security guard, drove us to the Empire State building in one of the camp vans. According to Chiron, and all the other campers, Olympus was actually situated on the 600th floor of the building. I’m not sure I believe them, but on the other hand, if men that are half horse exist, why shouldn’t Olympus be on top of a well known building in Manhattan?

As Argus dropped us off in front of the building and drove off, the three of us stood there, unsure where to go. It would be dumb to just turn west and go in that direction. On the other hand, what else were we supposed to do? I turned to my friends, about to ask them, when I was interrupted by a hole opening up 3 feet away from where I was standing.

“Woah,” Jake said, and grabbed my arm to make sure I didn’t fall in. “Careful.”

“What’s this?” asked Cress as she inched closer to the hole and looked down. “There’s a ladder going down here. I’m going to go investigate,” she said, but I stopped her.

“Something gives me the feeling that that’s not a normal hole,” I said. I crouched down, and looked at the top rung of the ladder. “Delta,” I whispered, brushing my hand over the symbol that was on the rung. It looked like a triangle, but two of the sides were thicker than the other.

“What?” asked Cress, frowning at me.

“It’s the Ancient Greek letter Delta,” answered Jake. “This… This must be the Labyrinth of Daedalus.” He backed away from the hole, his eyes wide.

As he said the name Daedalus, several images flashed through my head. An old man, the half bull and half man creature that was the Minotaur, and a bronze owl. I stumbled, and Jake caught my arm, steadying me.

“I think… I think that we’re supposed to go down there,” I said. “I think Athena’s waiting for us there.”

“We can’t go down there, Evie!” exclaimed Jake, looking at me. “We don’t know where we’ll end up! The Labyrinth has a mind of its own, we’ll get hopelessly lost. Have you gone mad?”

I shot him an angry look. “Cress, what do you think?”

Cress looked at me. “I don’t know. You are the quest leader though. So I’ll go with whatever you choose, Lieutenant Jones.”

Jake sighed and grit his teeth. “Fine. Let’s go down into the Labyrinth of Daedalus, and pray we come out unscathed.”
