Chapter 21
There was nobody outside the cave, so I guessed that Chiron had headed back to the dining hall. I ran down the hill. When I got there, the campers went silent, even though there hadn’t been much conversation before that anyways.
“I have a prophecy,” I said, facing Chiron. “Should I read it?” Chiron nodded, and I began, making sure to change the first line ever so slightly. After I finished, the dining hall was silent. Chiron was the first to break the silence.
“With her two companions,” he said. “That means we won’t be breaking the traditions, and I guess that’s good. Evie,” he continued, turning to me. “Who do you want to take with you?”
I didn’t have to think for a long time. I had already decided when I was in the woods that morning, and besides, it wasn’t like there were a lot of other people I could ask to come with me and would be comfortable with them guarding my back.
“Cress and Jake,” I said, making eye contact with the two of them. Cress grinned at me, and Jake nodded.
“Very well then,” Chiron announced. “Everyone except for the cabin counselors, Evie, Cressida, and Jake are dismissed after breakfast. We will be having a meeting in the Big House discussing the quest.”
I went over and sat down next to Jake at the Hermes table. “Thanks for choosing to take me with you,” he said to me.
“It’s not like I could take anybody else anyways,” I answered. “You and Cress are the only people I would feel comfortable about going on a quest with.”
He looked around to make sure no one was listening, then whispered. “It didn’t say ‘the one unclaimed’, did it?”
“No, it didn’t,” I whispered back with a sigh. “It said ‘the child of death’. Which is weird, since I’m not exactly ‘the child’. I’m more of… a descendant.”
After breakfast ended, Jake, Cress, and I walked over to the Big House together. A couple minutes later, our trio, Chiron, and the cabin counselors were gathered around the Ping Pong table in the rec room of the Big House.
“I’ve asked you to come here,” he said to the cabin counselors, “to help figure out the meaning of the prophecy. Evie, will you recite the first two lines?”
I took a deep breath, then said, slowly and deliberately: “The one unclaimed shall lead the quest/ with her two companions she shall head west.”
“Well, we know Evie has to lead the quest,” said Rowan from the Apollo cabin, the one that had dubbed me as ‘the one unclaimed’. “And ‘with her two companions’, Jake and Cress, she has to go to the west.”
I recited the next two lines. “They must retrieve the hero’s blade/ before the one of power completes his raid.”
“My guess,” said Jake, “is that we have to find the sword or weapon of some hero. But who’s this ‘one of power’, and what or where is he raiding?”
“I’m afraid the next two lines give us the answer to your second question,” I said. “Twelve trials she’ll face, before the final test/ After which her newfound home may be forever at rest. He’s going to be raiding Camp Half-Blood.”
