Chapter 19
I opened my eyes. I was still in the Hermes cabin, and I could hear Oscar snoring from the other end of the room. The sun was already starting to peek out from below the horizon, so I decided to take a walk, clear my head, and get my thoughts straight.
I quietly slipped out of bed, put on my shoes, then went to the washroom to change into jeans and an orange camp shirt. I slipped on my weapons belt, glad to have the now familiar blades close to me. I then set out towards the forest. I didn’t go too far in, since I had no desire to be attacked by a monster at 6 am in the morning; but I walked in and found a nice rock to sit on. I debated against taking out my sketchpad, but in the end, the Picasso in my brain won, and I got it and flipped to a new page.
When I looked down at it a couple minutes after, I realized that I had started drawing Jake. I guess that like other demigods, I had ADHD too; I would start doing something, and when I looked back at whatever I was doing, it would be done, my subconsciousness doing it for me. I also had a little bit of dyslexia, because my brain was supposedly wired for Ancient Greek (or so Chiron had told me).
Thanatos had tried to tell me something, something about the gods…. And me. He wanted me to get a quest from Chiron, but for what? There was something about a prophecy too; I guessed that Thanatos had been telling me to get a quest from Chiron, get a prophecy, and set off. I had also learned from the other campers that a quest was usually a trio; who would I take with me?
The answer was on the paper in front of me. I had, inevitably, drawn my two friends, Jake and Cress. I’d feel most comfortable with them there, although I still hadn’t told Cress about who my godly ancestor was.
By the time I had formulated a plan about how to get Chiron to give me permission for a quest, it was 7:30 am, and the camp was beginning to wake up. I walked over to the Hermes cabin as Jake walked out of it. He saw me and sighed with relief.
“Where were you?” he asked me, a slightly worried look on his face.
“In the woods,” I said, then looked around to make sure no one was looking. “I had another dream. My… Grandpa came to talk to me again. He told me that the gods are planning something, and that I need to get a quest from Chiron and-”
I was interrupted by our arrival at the dining hall, where Chiron stood up to make an announcement, forcing us to stay quiet.
“I have an important announcement to make!” he repeated. “Tomorrow, at dawn, there will be a quest departing.” he made eye contact with me. “And Evie will be leading it.”
