A memory, and a visit from my grandpa

Chapter 10
In the Hermes cabin, it was just me, Jake, and one other kid named Oscar. The new kids that had yet to be claimed were usually put in the very front of the cabin, while the actual kids of Hermes were in the back. After all that had happened today, I was exhausted, and fell asleep as soon as my eyes shut.

I found myself sitting in the front passenger seat of a car. I looked around, uncertain of where I was, and choked. Beside me, in the driver’s seat, was my mom. “Mom,” I tried to whisper, but I couldn’t; I was simply a spectator in a scene.

We were standing at a red light, waiting to go straight, when another car pulled up beside us on the otherwise empty street. I looked at the person in the car; except it wasn’t a person. It was a man, but he had the head of a dog; a cynocephali, I remembered from one of the greek mythology books I’ve read. As if sensing my gaze, he snarled, and my mom looked over at him. The confusion on her face made it clear that she saw the cynocephali. Then, the confusion turned to terror as she realized that this couldn’t mean anything good for her.

As the green light turned on, she stepped on the gas, in an attempt to get away from the cynocephali; but it was too late. The cynocephali turned into our car, and we were pushed off the road and down a hill, the car flipping multiple times. The airbags deployed, but it was no use; nobody could possibly survive a crash like that. I yelled, forgetting that I wasn’t actually there; and then suddenly, I was no longer in the car.

I found myself in an ornate room made entirely of black marble. I looked at myself, expecting to be invisible again; but this time, it was as if I was really there. I looked up, and gasped. In front of me stood an angel. His skin was the colour of wood, and his golden eyes stood out in his regal face. A curtain of black hair flowed down his shoulders. The wings that sprouted from his shoulder blades were beautiful, glimmering in shades of blue, purple, and black.

“I tried to save her,” he said, looking off into the distance. His voice was as beautiful as he himself was, deep and melodious. “But even I cannot stop fate itself. Your mother never knew who she was, until it was too late. She was lucky that she was hardly any different from the other mortals; otherwise, she wouldn’t have lived for as long as she did. You, on the other hand…” he looked at me. “You are far more powerful than anybody can even dream of. Yet you must use it wisely, my dear.”

“Who are you?” I whispered.

“You know who I am. Your mother... my daughter... had always been different, but she never thought much of it. You, though, have always questioned who you really were; and now, you are finally finding your place in this world.”

I had so many questions, but I never got the chance to ask them; the darkness thickened, and then it was all around me. I turned to him, but I was alone, and he was gone.
