Chapter 1
Life is hard when you’re a freak. I’m Evie Jones, and my life is a mess. If only I’d stayed home that day, nothing would have happened… But I’ll tell you the entire story from the top.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been different. I see things differently, I hear things differently… Let me tell you what I mean. Last year, my school went to the zoo for a field trip, and while we were there, a trio of kids broke in. They were stopped by security, but the kids knocked them out and ran out of the zoo. At least, that’s the version of the story I later heard from my teachers and classmates; what I saw was a little different. The kids did break in to the zoo; but the security were (and you’ll think I’m crazy) oddly skeletal. And the kid in the front, probably the leader of the group, took out a sword from the scabbard that hung by her side and swung it into one of the skeletons, which exploded into dust at the touch of the blade. Which was odd, because according to the rest of my group, he later got up and started running after the kids, and I doubt he could’ve done that if he was a pile of dust. This isn’t the only time something like this has happened, where I see one thing, and everybody else sees another; there was also that time at the beach, where I’m sure that giant fish was a mermaid, and another time in the forest, and- well, I think you get the idea.
But the problem was, I couldn’t tell anybody. I was already the “weird” kid at school after the incident at the zoo, and anyways, nobody would believe me. I had to keep it to myself, and if I’m to be honest, it started to drive me crazy. But that all changed when I met HIM.
