The Palomino Horse

Chapter 2
The sun was shining brightly the next morning. Freya jumped up from her bed and then gently kicked Rose to wake her up. She knew that something exciting was going to happen today.
"Rose, come on, you lazy pants!" shouted Freya.
"Why so eager?" Rose asked sleepily.
"Well," Freya paused. "I feel like something good is gonna happen today."
"Like what?"
"I dunno."
Rose sighed, then burst out laughing. Freya joined in with her.
Then it was breakfast time. (Freya didn't eat hers). Then suddenly Miss Raven announced, "Children, I think it is time for us to go somewhere."
Freya nudged Rose and said, "See?"
Rose paid no attention to her but kept on listening eagerly to Miss Raven.
Freya became excited. She hopefully thought, I hope there is horses where we go! You see, Freya did dearly love horses. Then she became bold and she stood up and said to Miss Raven loudly, "Miss Raven, could we possibly go to the park near this orphanage?"
"Who said it was your decision?" snapped Cook, but Miss Raven smiled and said, "Yes, we may."
"Thank you," Freya said and sat back down.
"But children, Mr. Vengot will be coming with us," said Miss Raven, "And no complaints."
But Freya groaned. Mr. Vengot was always strict and got angry very quickly if a child did something disobedient.
Rose nudged Freya angrily. "Freya, you're always so - always so -" but she couldn't find the right word to say.

The next morning dawned early and Freya was up. "Rose, come on! We're going to go today!" she exclaimed. "Don't be a lazy cat!" she laughed.
"You're always so excited in the mornings, and I don't know why," said Rose, yawning. She pulled the bed covers back over her and then said, "And it's so early in the morning. Go back to sleep!"
But soon the whole orphanage was up. Mr. Vengot was in the dining room and everyone was silent while they ate their grainy old oatmeal.
Then they were going to leave to go to the Park!
Freya was first there. She had run ahead. The Park was very nice. It had lots of trees and lush green grass covered the ground. Then something caught Freya's eye. Standing close by, behind a low fence, was a horse. Freya stared and stared. And the horse looked at her. Then Freya cautiously and slowly moved towards the horse, her face shining. The horse did not move, but stayed where it was. Then Freya was suddenly right next to it. She outstretched her hand and touched the horse's forehead where a blaze was. She moved her hand down and touched the muzzle. It was so soft and velvety. The horse moved a little and brushed it's ear against Freya's hand. She laughed softly. She knew that she could not be noisy in front of a horse, for it would frighten it. Then she moved slowly and began to climb over the fence. Now right next to the horse, she could pat the horse properly. Then she noticed that the horse was a palomino. They were very pretty and so was this one - very.
Then suddenly there were shouts and the palomino nickered.
"Shh, it's okay," soothed Freya. Then she quickly climbed back over the fence, then ran to the other children and shouted, "Guys, shh! You're going to frighten the palomino horse!" Then she whispered under her breath, "Just shut up!"
"Horse?" a boy asked.
"Yes!" said Freya. "Now guys, I want you to stay back."
"What about me?" Rose asked grumpily.
Freya frowned then said, "Okay fine, but you have to be quiet."
Rose nodded. "Right."
Freya slowly walked back to the palomino horse. Then she suddenly said, "I think I know what to call this horse. Alezan. It means chestnut. And this horse is chestnut white."
"Okay. Hi Alezan!" said Rose loudly.
"Shut up! Sorry - but you have to be quiet," snapped Freya. "Or else you'll have to go away."
"Fine," said Rose. She put out her hand and let Alezan muzzle it. "Ooh, so soft," she said, giggling.
"Yeah." Freya smiled. "Here, do you want to climb over the fence."
Rose didn't say anything at first. But then, "The horse won't do anything to me, right? And by the way, I'm not such a Hippophile as you are."
Freya laughed softly. "I'm sure Alezan wouldn't harm anyone. And what is a Hippophile?"
"Oh, it means a horse lover."
"Oh yeah, I'm a hippophile, sure. Anyway, come on." Freya had already climbed over the fence and now she held out her hand to Rose to help her over.
Rose had just began to relax with Alezan, when a child came running towards them and shouting, "Ooh! A palomino!"
"Oh no, no!" whispered Freya. Alezan reared and cantered slowly away.
Rose got a fright. She clutched Freya's arm. But Freya said to the child who had shouted, "Why did you do that? You knew not to! I told you!" she started to climb over the fence and then walked away.
Mr. Vengot appeared. "What's going on?" he asked sharply.
Freya turned to him. "That girl -" she said, pointing, "Scared away Alezan!"
"Who's Alezan?" Mr. Vengot asked. "Making up stuff, huh?"
"No, Alezan's my horse," said Freya, and she thought, Well, Alezan it kind of like my horse. I think he likes me.
"Your horse? What rubbish are you making up?" snapped Mr. Vengot.
"Can you see that horse, over there? That's Alezan!" Freya pointed.
Mr. Vengot squinted his eyes. "Hmm. Well, that's no reason to snap at a child," and he walked away.
