Chapter 1: In the Beginning
Chapter 1
The beginning of the Faere's reign was terrifying. Bloodshed, destruction, orphans, poverty. Anyone who resisted or fought back were executed or tortured. They called themselves Faere, or Superior Beings. They believed that they were the only ones with the right to rule. They believed that they towered over everyone. People were enslaved, tortured for fun, and put to work. It was a time of despair, grief, and sadness.
There were rebellions of course. They were quickly diminished.
The Faere's reign seemed endless. The people had lost hope. No one could stop them. The Faere had power, superiority, and allies. The people? They had nothing. They had no light at the end of the tunnel. They didn't have hope to grab onto. That is until the Prophecy.
On the night of the anniversary of the Faere's rise to power, Greara White, the leader asked a psychic to tell her fortune. This was how the prophecy was born. It spoke of a person born on the night of a blue moon who had blue blood. That person would be the only one able overthrow the tyrannical rule of the Faere.
Ever since that time, the people had been hopeful. They had something to grasp onto. A flicker of hope had spurred them on. Of course, the Faere have been determined to quench the person before they could become a threat. Every blue moon, the Faere would send assassins out and murder any babies that were born on that day.
One night, the Blue Moon shined brightly in the sky. The people hoped that this night was the night that their savior was born. Indeed it was. Emma and Tom Melnik took their child deep in the forest. They knew that an assassin was on their trail.
"Tom, I can't go any further" she gasped. She sat down near the river and placed her child in a tree hollow. Tom glanced around nervously. "Emma, they will kill her if we don't stop." Emma looked over at him. "Hide our child. When they come, we'll let them kill us" she whispered. Tom nodded and looked at his wife sadly. "If our child is the one destined to safe all of us, we will have not died in vain" That night, Tom and Emma quickly hid their child in a patch of Bracken deep in the forest.
Tom and Emma Melnik were murdered. Two hours later, an old man named George Stafford found their child in the bracken bush. He named her Bracken and knew immediately that she was their savior. It might have been the brightness of the moon. Maybe the aura that seemed to come from her. George took her to the village and left her in an alleyway. He was too old to care for her and knew that anyone who saw the newborn child would not take her in.
It would take another 13 years until the people's hope would flourish. Bracken would not know of her role in this despairing time until she is 13. A long time indeed. The Faere were furious that a child had escaped their clutches. Tension was rising, and worse things were to come until the Faere got their clutches on the child.
