Chapter 6
It was the best day ever. I was finally awake. My mom’s ecstatic face was like a bowl of sour oranges. And I really love sour oranges. It had been 6 years since I’ve had them.
It was my 13th birthday, and I was overjoyed. I had made the soccer team, I had received a trip to New York, yes, a trip to New York. I had always wanted to go there. A few days later we were standing in front of the Statue of liberty. I could not believe my eyes. Everything was going so perfectly.
My brother Mark was really hungry, while my best friend Colin wanted to stay there for a few more minutes. I was hungry as well, so Mark and I rode off. He was talking about his crush and how he was going to do a project with her. He went on and on about how they would be together for 5 years (5 was his favourite number) then they’d get married and live happily ever after. I was teasing him that he watched too many rom-coms and that would never happen.
That’s when it happened. I still can’t remember it. It was all the other person’s fault. They were too fast and they came speeding right at us. It all happened so quickly. I heard Mark’s screams. Blood was all over me. So many people surrounded us. At the corner of my eyes I could see the man. I didn’t see his face, he was turned around and was talking to the police officer. He was probably really rich, because they let him go. Just like that.
On the way to the hospital, I kept asking everyone where Mark was. ‘’Where is my brother? Where is he? He’s not dead is he?’’ The sad look on their face explained everything. My brother was gone. Mark was gone. All my happiness was gone.
Even now, when everyone is so happy to see me, I wish it was me. Not Mark. I wish it was me who died. Mark had so much to do. So much to achieve. He wanted to marry Sofia, his crush, and become a chef. He was so kind and smart. And he’s dead. He was just 18!
Still, I was quite happy. Everyone I loved was here with me. My mom, my dad, my best friend, my grandparents, my friends from school, everyone except Mark. It wasn’t perfect, but it was still good.
I was riding my bicycle, when a car came speeding at me. Whoever it was shouldn’t have been here – it was a bicycle only zone! I was frozen in spot. It was just like how it happened 6 years ago. And it was happening again.
