The First Night in the Arena
Chapter 16
I don't know what time it is. I guess that makes sense since I'm in an arena with bloodthirsty kids trying to murder me. It's getting dark to I think it's night time. I'm still sitting in the tree. I haven't moved since the Bloodbath. I've been sitting and watching the Careers. They cleared out for a while, so they could clear out the bodies, but I don't know where they went. They have recruited Noah, the boy from 3, Ellie, the girl from 4, and Peeta, the boy from 12. The Careers only recruited Peeta so they can kill Katniss. I haven't seen her for ages but I have seen some of the other tributes. Rue has been climbing around some of the trees across from me. The girl from 8 hid in some bushes but she has emerged and is starting to make a fire. She's going to get killed but that's not my problem. Thresh ran into a maze and hasn't emerged since. A noise attracts my attention. The Careers have spotted the girl from 8's fire and they are running over. I can see 2 shapes in the trees above. It's Rue and someone else. I hear a scream but no cannon. I hear some arguing but it seems they come to an agreement. Not long after, I hear a cannon. Someone must have gone back for her. Well the girl from 8 is dead. Suddenly, the anthem of Panem starts playing. A projection appears in the sky. It's time for the Fallen Tributes. In the sky I see the faces of the girl from 3, the boy from 4, Patrick, both from 6, both from 7, both from 8, both from 9 and the girl from 10. 12 all up. At least it's not me. The Careers are smiling and counting on their fingers. Probably trying to remember how many they killed each. My stomach rumbles. I haven't eaten since this morning. I'll wait until the Careers are asleep. That's the safest option. The Careers are starting to settle down now anyway. The boy from 3 is on watch first. I don't know why they need one because nobody in their right mind would attack them. I carefully climb down the tree. My feet hit the floor a bit louder then I would have liked. I hope I didn't alert any nearby tributes. My eyes scan for food. I see some berries and pick them up. They're purple. I try to remember if they are poisonous or not. Suddenly it hits me. It's nightlock. I'd be dead in a few seconds if I eat these. I put them back and search for other food. I see some flowers that I remember are edible. It's better than nothing. I grab a few more. I put them in my pocket. I climb back up the tree. I look towards the Cornucopia. The boy from 3 is just sitting there. As I lie there, my eyes to start to close. Next thing I know I'm asleep.
