Chapter 4 - Yuulis

Chapter 4
“My lord,” Yuulis said, giving a bow to the man in front of her. He nodded his head, his slick black hair rustling in the wind being blown through the castle. His green eyes seemed to pierce Yuulis as she stood up. His suit was crisp and clean, ready for the night’s activities.
“Captain Yuulis, it’s nice to see you again. I assume you’ve been keeping busy?” he asked, taking a glass from a passing server. Yuulis followed suit.
“Yes, my lord. The new Grandmaster is coming soon, I’m preparing everything for him,” Yuulis responded. Grandmaster Chris had just passed in the recent war, so the Council had just appointed a new one. Yuulis, as Vice Captain of the Armies, was to be his Guardian, which meant she was training a lot more than usual.
“Good. We don’t want to lose another Grandmaster in such a short time.” It seemed like banter, but Yuulis, who’d basically grown up in the court, knew he was covering up pain and anger. Grandmaster Chris was Lord Eisenhower’s brother, of course he’d still be grieving.
“My condolences, my lord. Your brother was one of the bravest men I had the honor of serving with,” Yuulis said, bowing again. Lord Eisenhower simply waved her off, the signal that he didn’t wish to talk anymore.
Yuulis turned and walked away, her purple hair swinging behind her. It was pulled up into a high ponytail, but even still it reached her knees. Her orange eyes shimmered with Magic just waiting to be released.
“Yuulis! Over here,” a voice called. Yuulis turned, and joined the ladies sitting in the corner. “Lady Eisenhower, how are you?” she asked, bowing.
“Oh, stop that. You know I don’t care much for those silly formalities. Ellie here has been telling me the funniest stories. Why don’t you join us?” The blonde woman asked, her pink eyes shining. She wore a white and dark blue dress, the colors of victory and mourning. Sapphire rings glittered on her fingers, a necklace of diamonds sat around her neck.
Yuulis nodded, and sat down. The brown haired girl across from her smiled. Her silver eyes seemed to glow. Yuulis gave a tiny smile back before turning to Lady Elanor Winthrop. “Lady Winthrop, how have you been?”
“Oh, little things here and there to keep me busy,” she said, her hand with a single ruby ring waving in front of her. Her deep blue hair was pulled into a bun, a few strands falling loose. Her green eyes shimmered like the ocean. Her sea-blue dress matched her ocean theme, even with a single necklace with pearls draped across her neck.
Yuulis nodded. “Are you getting any better?” she asked, taking a sip from her wine. Elanor nodded. “Of course, I don’t spend all my time studying for nothing.” She held out her hand, where a ball of water formed.
The brown haired girl watched in amazement. “I wish I could do that,” she said sadly, looking at her hands. Her eyes didn’t shimmer the way Yuulis’ or Elanor’s did, she had no Core and no Magic.
Elanor turned to her, her eyes glowing faintly. “It’s not that impressive,” she said, and the water ball dispersed. The brown haired girl looked at her, a passionate fire in her eyes. “But it is, especially to us Coreless! It’s amazing how the gods blessed people like that!”
Elanor laughed, placing her hand in her lap. The girl with black hair between the brown haired girl and Yuulis spoke up, her yellow eyes gleaming like gold. “Elizabeth, honey, stop wishing for something you don’t have. It’s never going to happen.” Her dress was black, something that kept her in the spotlight. A choker of diamonds glittered on her neck, and her black gloves made her hands nearly impossible to see when they were against her dress.
Elizabeth glared at her. “You’re one to talk. The King is never gonna choose you to marry his son, Caroline. So just give it up.”
Caroline sat up straighter. Lady Eisenhower and Elanor looked away, but Yuulis’ hand traveled down to her rapier. She could feel the Magic pooling in her hands, ready to use. She wouldn’t mind striking down Caroline right here and now, no one particularly liked her.
But Caroline saw Yuulis’ hand. “You’re lucky you have Yuulis watching your back.” she growled. She stood up, threw her drink onto Elizabeth, and stormed out. Yuulis watched her leave, then went over and started helping Elizabeth with her dress.
“It’s fine, Lena.” she said, taking Yuulis’ hands. “Don’t worry. I was thinking about turning in for the night anyway.” She kissed Yuulis’ forehead. “See you in the morning.” And with that, she got up and left.
