Chapter 2 - Jason
Chapter 2
He swirled his drink around, upset he hadn’t gone over to talk to her earlier. He had noticed her when she came in, and had noticed how she had sat there, doing nothing. She hadn’t even touched her drink until just before Jason worked up the nerve to go and talk to her. He had really wanted to know more about her bond with her Draid, he’d never seen a bond that strong. Sure, Anita had a Draid, but she was a recent addition, and the two barely got along.
He stared into the bottom of his drink, unsure of what to do. He could go upstairs and head to sleep, but he was more awake at night. He sighed, deciding to go out for another round. He tossed a couple coins on the table and left.
Once he left the tavern, Jason tore off towards the building in the middle of the town. He pressed himself against the wall, making sure no one was around. He knelt down in front of the door, and pulled out his tools. He worked the lock for a bit, and it popped open in his hand. He looked around and quietly entered the domed building.
Technically, only the mayor of the town, the Royal Family, the Royal Guards, and diplomats from other towns and kingdoms were really allowed in this building, but the mayor had gotten slack with rules and didn’t care who came in. As long as they kept their hands to themselves.
Jason krept around the building, using his soft-toed shoes to his advantage, as he always did. He kept his eyes along the walls, searching for the entrance he had found earlier. There!
He dashed over to the wall, pulling on his gloves. He felt along the wall, until he found the crack. He dug his fingers in, and pulled. He could feel the wall moving, but it wasn’t enough. He’d probably get caught if he didn’t open it faster.
He reached into his bag and pulled out a bracelet. He put it on, and pulled open the door a lot faster than before. Jason slid into the opening, and closed the wall behind him. He checked to make sure that no one had seen him close the wall, and dashed down the hall.
After a bit of running, Jason slowed to a stop, panting. While the bracelet boosted his strength, it sadly lowered his endurance. He slid it off and stuffed it back into his bag. Feeling more energized, he took off down the hall again. Soon he came to a stop, this time because he was about to head down some stairs. He took a deep breath, and carefully walked down the stairs.
As he went, the stairs got more and more ancient looking, with cracks and sections missing. He tried to be careful and avoid the most broken steps, but it was hard at times. Finally he reached the bottom, and he looked around.
The room had eternal burning fires, so his eyes needed time to adjust. The red flames crackled at intervals around the room, bathing it in a warm light. In front of him was a casket, clearly opened recently. The top was cracked a little, dust cleared in a hand print on the lid. Along the walls were little niches, stands, and drawers full of jewels and priceless Arteficts.
Jason dashed to one of the cabinets. He knelt down, dust covering his knees. He pulled out his tools again, and picked the lock on the cabinet. He pulled out the drawer, and picked up the jewels inside. They must’ve been worth a fortune back when this guy was alive, now they were priceless Arteficts.
He held up a necklace made with silver and diamonds. The jewels varied in size, with the smallest ones being on the edges and the biggest one in the middle. Jason placed it in his bag, and continued shuffling through the drawer. He pulled out a couple more objects before moving to another cabinet. He did the same thing again, until he had gone through all the cabinets. He knew other raiders would be coming once the rumor started floating around, so he had to leave something for them.
He turned and headed back up the stairs and through the hall. He pushed open the wall, closed it, and left the building. After he managed to relock the front door, he went into the tavern, and headed upstairs to his room for the night.
