Chapter 2
Theodora had never liked mathematics. She had always regarded the subject as too precise, too fiddly. Some things you couldn't explain perfectly.
So she wasn't exactly thrilled when she heard that it was now time for arithmetic. She took the paper Mrs Dodge gave her and looked at it. Great. Fractions.
But she didn't show her dismay, and began to figure out the common denominator of twelve and forty three. Her attention was not long occupied by this, however, as a blackbird suddenly landed on the window outside of the classroom. Theodora looked up, and her eyes twinkled.
"Ambrose, what are you doing here?" She breathed, touching the window gently with one finger.
The blackbird cocked its head and looked at her with a bright, orange rimmed eye.
Theodora frowned slightly. "The nest?"
The blackbird paused, and then it clicked its beak.
Theodora bit her lip. She had to leave class. If what Ambrose told her was true, and the excavators had arrived sooner then she thought, Ambrose's family were doomed. Abruptly, she stood up.
Mrs Dodge looked up, her eyes skeptical under her wide brimmed glasses. "Miss Wood?" She asked dryly. "Is there a problem?"
Theodora fumbled for an excuse. "Mrs Dodge, I - erm - I need to go to the - the -."
The class giggled. Theodora blushed slightly, but looked steadily at her teacher.
Mrs Dodge nodded curtly. "Very well, Miss Wood, off you go - but be quick."
Theodora nodded and slipped out of her desk. She knew that students were looking at her, but she felt one pair of eyes staring at her more intently than any other. She did not stop to look at whom it was, but left the classroom. She did not turn left towards the lavatory, however, instead hastened down the corridor towards the back door which led to the courtyard and playground, where she had spent lunch. As soon as she opened the door, she felt a flurry of wings as Ambrose landed on her shoulder. Theodora nodded at him. "Let's go."
The blackbird flew off her shoulder to land on top of the wall which surrounded the courtyard.. Theodora followed him, and, with the help of some vines that grew along the stones, hoisted herself up and over, into the busy street.
Ambrose flew ahead, seemingly guiding her, but Theodora knew the way. She took the street at a run, swerving round lampposts and skidding at corners.
It seemed a long time to Theodora before she saw the entrance to Preston Park. She slowed at the entrance and saw almost immediately what she dreaded.
A sectioned off area of the park filled with trees was under construction. The excavators were beginning their work. She could see the nest, and inside it four little chicks huddled low. Theodora set her jaw and ducked underneath the red ribbons that sectioned off the excavators area.
