Chapter 1
The foal nickered, and kicked at his mother. She didn't move, but gazed at her foal silently.
The prairie grass waved gently. It was all silent. Then suddenly there came the sound of galloping horses. It came closer and closer and as it did, the foal's mother tensed. Then the galloping of horses came into sight. On the horses, were humans. Mother immediately began to trot away anxiously. The foal followed her slowly.
The humans came closer.
With the foal, Mother couldn't just gallop away. The foal was slow. His mother nickered. The humans on the horses came closer and closer. Then one of them yelled, "Look, George! The mare's got a foal!"
"Why, I've never seen one in the wild," yelled back George. Then he took out a rope. "We've got a try and round them up," he yelled to the other men. They nodded.
Mother began to panic. She ran faster and the foal tried to too. But he tripped. His mother stopped abruptly and muzzled him. The foal tried to get up, and he manged to. He started to trot, then went faster. His mother began to again, too.
Then suddenly dust flew up into the men's eyes and mouth. They choked and were unable to see. That gave Mother and her foal a chance to get away. And they did. Mother seemed relieved. They were safe, after all.
