Non Magical Plants
Chapter 15
While the Ministry of Magic does not classify these plants, I feel that it is important to talk about them as the lack of classification is only a symptom of a larger problem. This problem is that people no longer care about the natural world in what is called The Gardening Effect. Most common in Muggles, they have built up their lives with things so much that they don't see any wonder in nature and that it is only something to be studied. This has caused the study plants for their own sake to be neglected for how they can be used in potions instead (which I admit I have fallen prey to myself at times). Even wizards who are aware that there is more to the world than that we can study with our magic have fallen to a different form of this: that anything that isn't magical isn't worth our interest. However, it is important to know that things both magical and non-magical have their uses as I will show by including the notes of Muggle Herbologists of two very useful non-magical plants.
Lilies
When growing this plant should be placed in 1/4 inch of soil with plenty of sunlight. The bulbs can be placed in any direction, but take care in the type of lily that you grow, as not all produce the beautiful flowers that might be desired. This flower has been shown to regulate the heart rate, assist in the treatment of burns and scars, and its scent can help in various forms of aroma therapies. In addition, the rest of the plant is an excellent source of fibre and can help cure coughs, stomach problems, wounds, sores and bruised areas.
Roses
The English Rose can be grown in most common house gardens that have been well maintained. While it might appear to be a pile of sticks when it arrives at your home, this is only because it is in its dormant state. Once when it is planted and has received nutrients, it will quickly flower. In addition, these roses have 40 different uses depending on if you use their petals, oil or roots. The important uses include treating burns, stomach problems, depression, headaches, skin problems, stress, fevers, and sleep problems.
