Rat Root

Chapter 12

M.o.M Classification: XXX

In all of my travels, I've come across few plants with as many diverse uses as Rat Root. However, this reed-like perennial with its many uses is not recommended to be taken in large doses for long periods of time. This is because it has many dangerous properties such as acting as an abortifacient, causing hallucinations and is a laxative. Despite these dangers though, it is considered that as long as you are aware of how much you are taking then the benefits outweigh the risks.

It can be used to relieve pain (anodyne), to destroy parasitic worms (anthelmintic), relieve flatulence (carminative), counter the side effects of hallucinogens caused by other things, improve urination (diuretic), cure ear aches (otalgic), and act as a sedative. With combinations of these benefits, it can help cure toothaches, burns and eye problems, as well as used in some tonics and love potions.

When growing this plant the most important thing is that the soil that it is in is moist. This means that it only needs to be watered once every two or three days and get plenty of sunlight. Rat Root flowers blossom in May and June and the seeds should be quickly planted in July and August.
