Chapter 2
In this chapter, I am going to quote each book, at a part when Snape's good side peeks through. You have to look beneath his sneers and glares. I know he is not much of a looker, but he does have a good heart, under layers of grudges and heartbreaks.
Book 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
Quote: "Yer not still on abou' that are yeh? Look, Snape helped protect the Stone, he's not about ter steal it"
Explanation: This is said by Hagrid, but shows Snape's good side. He helped protect the stone, and he didn't steal it. And he also tried (and succeeded) to say Harry's life. He would not do that if he was a Dark Wizard. Right?
Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Quote: I could not find a quote that truly represented him.
Explanation: He is not as main of a character in this book, and so I could only find negative quotes about him. Nothing that shows his true nature deep inside.
Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban
Quote: "Oh no. I just think he has suffered a serious disappointment"
Explanation: This is said by Dumbledore who trusts Snape the most. Severus was not bad, he was just holding a grudge. People were mean to him, and he wanted to get back. But he pushed it aside just enough not to get in trouble with Dumbledore.
Book 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Quote: "Look, the Dark Mark. It has been getting darker all year, and tonight it burned. I felt it."
Explanation: This is said by Snape himself as he admits his Dark Mark. He wouldn't show it to the minister of magic if he were not truly good. It is an attempt to make amends, and is a pity it doesn't work. Fudge does then know he was a death eater, and that was a risk Snape took.
Book 5: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Quote: "He's got Padfoot at the place where it is hidden!"
Explanation: Harry shouts this at Snape, and hoped that it would help. Harry thought though that he did not contact anyone. Snape did contact the Order, and he moved past a childhood grudge to do so. Even though they hated each other, he did not want Sirius to die.
Book 6: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Quote: "Severus, Severus, please..."
Explanation: These are Dumbledore's last words. We don't know what they mean at the time, but we latter find out that they were a plea for death. He killed Dumbledore. On his orders. Not Voldemort's orders, Dumbledore's orders. Even though most people hate him at this moment, this is where he shines the most in this, and possibly all of the books.
Book 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
Quote: "Look at me"
Explanation: More is explained latter, but his last words confirm everything people deny.
