Chapter 1
I stirred. I could hear the steady drip of rain outside, and feel the chill penetrating every particle of my body. My hide was failing in its responsibility to keep me warm, and I shivered. My stomach rumbled with hunger, but I had searched for food countless times, and there was hardly any prey. Even if I did notice a formulation of a meal I knew I would be incapable of catching it in my current physical state. I peered down at my dirty scales and my visible ribs. Exhaustion and weakness dominated inside me, and my contemplation of this was weary, unfocused. Mentally I was drowsy and lacking concentration, accepting the misfortune I was forced to bear, helplessly, without apparent protestation.
But I was objecting - or more, I would object. But I couldn't. It all seemed hopeless, I could barely stand up - my previous determination was gone, vanished permanently, it currently appeared. I lay motionless, my breaths wheezy gasps for oxygen, and my eyelids drooping as I blearily observed the cave. I had once been a strong, confident dragon - such change had come over me. I was starved.
At first it had been because of Muggle poachers. They had been hunting in the wild lands of which I inhabited, and gradually my customary prey had disappeared. I could have moved though, difficult as it would have been, had not the wizards come. Wizards intending to poach dragons. I could not leave then, it was dangerous. I had been forced to remain in my cave, watching as my desperate brother had made an attempt to leave and then been magicked forcefully down, and killed.
Sorrow welled up inside me. I had been sensible in one way, but irrational in the other. I knew it was possible that I starve if I stayed in my cave, but if I had gone out I would have been murdered. And it was still plausible that I be killed if I went out. The wizard poachers were still near. I had once considered fighting them off (obviously when I was still fit to do so, with my corporeal form capable) but decided not to cause trouble when they might go away. How foolish I had been! They did not go away, and my health got bad with lack of food. And now I suffered under starvation's cruel treatment, hopeless and weak in the face of death. Let this pain be over, I thought despairingly.
Then I smelled something. This faculty had been damaged by my ill state but I was able to discern the scent, and, after a moment's consideration, I recognized it. Could it be...? Another dragon arched it's head down and sniffed me, something bared in its teeth. Then it dropped it. It was a small phial, and contained clear liquid. As the dragon leaned forward again I heard a whisper in my ear. "Phoenix tears..." And then it was gone.
Phoenix tears. I knew what that meant. Desperately, I scrabbled forward, dragging my body toward the phial. Clumsily though deliberately I smashed the small bottle, and licked up what it spilled. All of it. My dry tongue was moistened, and, though at first I felt no effects, warmth and strength began to seep through me. The visual blurriness cleared. I could stand up. I felt sparks flickering inside me. My fire wanted to be breathed again. I felt energy dominating inside, and I shook myself. Dust and bits of rock flew off me, and I stretched my legs, proud to see my scales shimmer again. I approached the entrance to the cave and looked out.

Then I remembered, as if it had been a dream, the dragon. They had saved me, rescued me from a terrible future! I looked down, down the long slope of the mountain. The forest of trees stood resolute, just as they had the last time I had looked at them, and I watched a blackbird flutter across the green tops. The blue sky stretched on endlessly, and the sun beamed. I spread my wings. And took off.
The wind refreshed me considerably. I flew smoothly, and fell to a steady glide, only beating my wings occasionally to stay up. I was once again strong, and ready to face whatever came my way. I was once again the confident, independent dragon I had once been. But was I really going to just continue my life as always? No, I was going to find out who had helped me, whether they wanted me to or not.
And this wouldn't be too hard. For I could see the dragon ahead, silhouetted against the rising sun.
