In 1994 Moody came out of retirement at the request of Albus Dumbledore to teach the defence against the dark arts position at Hogwarts.
However news of this got to Voldemort who devised a plan to infiltrate Hogwarts.
Barth Crouch Jr and Peter Pettigrew went to his house overpowered Alastair and locked him in his own trunk!
For the majority of the school year Moody stayed locked in his trunk with Barry Crouch Jr pretending to be him under the effects of The Polyjuice Potion.
Disguised as mad-eye Barty Crouch Jr put Harry’s name in the goblet of fire under a different school name and tricking the goblet to forget there is only three houses in the triwizard tournament to guarantee Harry to get into it.
Crouch then helped Harry get through the tournament and touch the cup so he would be transported to little hangleton graveyard as part of Voldemort’s plan.
