The Other Snape

written by Louisa S R W

Biography and life story of Sarah Louisa Snape Riddle. This has been, in part a way for me to heal. I think it has done that. If you would like me to write more about certain aspects I will, but for now, I leave you with this.

Chapter One - Beginnings

Chapter 1
I started to write my uncle’s biography as so many of you have heard of him, but whilst I was writing I couldn’t stop a voice inside my head saying “That was between us”. It was right. I’ve written it anyway, and one day I may share but at the moment, this is me.

I was born in secret during the 1st Wizarding War. My father was a dark and powerful wizard by the name of Tom Riddle aka Lord Voldemort. I’m led to believe that his appearance was striking, angular features and dark hair. He was a descendent of Slytherin. My mother, Severina Snape, was a beauty and part of his young followers, quite a bit younger than he was. She had dark hair and a rounded face. She was the sister of another of his followers Severus Snape. How true that is I don't know. There are stories you are told as a child, as an orphan and I guess you make up truths to suit what you fancy even more. There are stories that say you are unable to feel love if conceived under the love potion but I truly believe that my father loved me and my mother. I am a transfigurist, born with translucent hair.

In 1980 I was living with my mother in Cokeworth, England. It is a place they had lived as children, but not a great place. We were alone, I don’t know where my uncle was, around this time he was a double agent death eater / order of the phoenix. All I can tell you is what I remember. – My mother had told me to go and get ready for bed. I was older and could do it myself, she said. As I got upstairs, I heard someone apparate in. They were talking loudly so I put on my pyjamas. Suddenly I heard her scream. There was green light in the living room. I stayed put. I looked down the stairs and saw a man. I don’t know if he saw me or not. I went down the stairs and saw my mother on the ground. I tried to wake her but she didn’t move. I had been told stories of people being frozen, I guess I thought that is what had happened. So, I took my teddy and went to sleep in her arms. The next day I awoke to the familiar voice of Uncle Severus asking why she was late. He saw me there, in her arms. I remember his look of shock. He hurried me out and told me to get dressed. Knowing him better now, I think he didn’t want me to see him cry. As siblings they weren’t very close but he had done so much already to try and protect her. He then made a vow to her to protect me. I don’t know what he did with her body after that and I don’t want to know. I know he knew how she died but he never told me and I know that Voldemort discovered that she was dead. The problem is Voldemort was led to believe by someone that I too may be dead. This was possibly the way that they made it look afterwards. I say this because it is my belief that my Uncle Severus went to Albus Dumbledore for guidance. He also asked for protection for Lily Potter.

Somebody had the best of intentions I am sure but Voldemort’s love fuelled his anger. He became unstoppable, until 31st October 1981, he killed James & Lily Potter at Godric’s Hollow and Harry survived the killing curse. When I lost my father, I was living at Knockturn Alley but everyone thought of Severus Snape in Cokeworth. I say it is Knockturn Alley because it is hidden. I am not ashamed. Many people have discouraged me from saying this and told me that I should say I live in Diagon Alley. I was hidden again, in a house located in the wall, just as you turn down the Alley. I didn’t go out much and few knew I was there. We had a house-elf named Gert. When my mother died, Uncle Severus performed a memory charm on both of his parents. It was so strong that it seems many people forgot about her. Uncle Severus went to speak to a healer about me because I was having terrible nightmares. He put potions on my teddy to help me sleep in the end.

Life in our house was strange to say the least. My uncle was working at Hogwarts as potion master and I now only saw him in the holidays. As my guardian he was still working out how to be a “parent” me as he was very young himself. It was a summer holiday, I must have been about 5/6 years old and we had had a great time, maybe it was just me, but by the end of it we were very close. I had never seen my uncle look so relaxed as he had done. I remember him looking at me in what would become "his way". A sense of pride almost that he had got me that far. Perhaps it was his "teacher" look. For some reason my uncle no longer wanted to be separated from me. In September I moved into the grounds of Hogwarts. My uncle had spent much of his time at Hogwarts alone and knew of a tree named Arber. He was magnificent. I lived there in Arber until the summer when we went back to Knockturn Alley.
