Chapter 3
Severus took Elphaba to Flourish and Blotts first.
"The Standard Book of Spells, A History of Magic, Magical Theory..." she muttered to herself as she went down the list of required books.
"Hurry up! We must get the rest of your supplies as well, and we haven't got all day." Her father told her.
After they'd gotten her cauldron and robes it was time to buy a wand. She stepped carefully into Ollivander's shop and was immediately approached by an old man.
"Hello, Elphaba. You look just like your father. Except for your smile. That came from your mother." the man said.
"How...?"
"How do I know your name? Your parents? They came in here themselves once or twice." Elphaba smiled at the thought of her father buying a wand. She had never seen him use any other wand than the one he carried now. Come to think of it, she had never seen him do a lot of things: smiling, laughing, singing, saying he loved her...
She shook her head. There had to be a reason, but now was not the time to ask questions.
"Try this one. Vine, twelve inches, pliable." Elphaba took it waved it in the air. Some boxes flew off the shelves.
"Sorry! I didn't mean to-"
"It's alright. It happens all the time." Ollivander said before she could finish. He looked amused. "Maybe this one. Maple wood, 11 ½ inches and surprisingly swishy."
Elphaba took it and gave it a wave. Now, this was her wand. She paid Ollivander for his services and went out to her father.
"What's next?" he asked impatiently.
Elphaba looked at her list. "I think we're done. Wait, can I have a pet?" She looked up at him eagerly.
"What kind of pet?"
"Can I have an owl?"
Severus looked down at her and examined her face, as if measuring her ability to handle the responsibility of having a pet. "Fine." He said, and he took her to buy one. It was a beautiful tawny owl, and it tucked its head under its wing. She decided to call her Hope.
