Faith in the Stars: Lucissa
Chapter 4
Narcissa Black sat down on a couch in the Slytherin common room, absolutely bored out of her mind. Though she was the youngest of three and had two older sisters, she had no one to talk to. Andromeda, the middle sister, who was in her seventh year, was off with her friends, probably at Hogsmead. Her eldest sister, Bellatrix, had graduated Hogwarts two years prior- she was now going to be married to Rudolphus Lestrange in order to keep the pureblood lineage that the Black family insisted upon.
She picked at her nails and sighed, running her fingers through the ends of her long blonde hair. Why was life so complicated? Why couldn't it go back to what it had been, with she and her two sisters playing together?
"Narcissa." said a voice behind her suddenly, making the fifth year jump. She turned around, looking up and meeting a pair of grey eyes.
"Lucius." she acknowledged to the Malfoy, trying not to smile at the prefect. "What do want this time?"
He walked around so that he was facing her. Surprisingly, unlike any other time that she had seen him, his pale face reddened slightly. "Come with me?" he asked, holding out his hand. She took it, standing up and adjusting one of her glittering opal earrings with her other. He led her out of the Slytherin common room in the dungeons, and out of Hogwarts to the grounds.
Lucius, looking nervous, walked down a path in the woods next to the lake. He stopped in a secluded yet beautiful spot; trees surrounded them on almost all sides. If they looked to their right, the lake would glimmer underneath the rays of the sun. To their left were wild flowers dotting the ground, each a different vivid color. The prefect took his wand out of his pocket, murmuring something inaudible to Narcissa who was admiring the scene. When he put his wand back in his pocket, a blanket lay on the grass, decorated by a picnic basket and a few pillows in varying shades of silver and green.
"It's always Slytherin, isn't it?" she asked playfully when she finally noticed it. Lucius gave something in between a smile and a smirk, walking over and sitting down.
"Slytherin's the best house." he said simply, shrugging slightly. "That's all there is to it." She laughed; Narcissa sat down on his right, fidgeting nervously with a lock of her hair. She didn't know why she was like this; it was just something about him- something about the way Lucius would walk, looking like he didn't have a care in the world, that made her smile.
"Narcissa?" Lucius said, almost nervously, glancing at her. "I have something for you." She watched curiously as he drew a small black box out of his pocket. She opened it; she gasped, eyes widening in awe, as she stared down at a necklace. It wasn't just a necklace, either. There was an opal swinging on a thin silver chain; a small opal that was held between two silver, winding snakes; two snakes that formed a heart. He looked at her as she stared at the necklace. "Do you like it?" he asked quietly, searching her face. She met his eyes, and nodded, smiling.
"Help me put it on?" She turned her head, pulling her hair over her shoulder. He took it from her, smiling slightly, putting it around her neck and fastening the clasp. His hand lingered there for a second; he could feel her heartbeat- steady yet a little fast, just like his.
"Nervous?" he said quietly, keeping his hand on the side of her neck. Narcissa smiled, looking at Lucius, clasping the pendant in her right hand, fingering the two serpents.
"Depends on what you mean." she replied softly, meeting his eyes.
"You know what I mean." he said, giving a small smile, leaning towards her a fraction.
"I guess I do." she whispered, right before her lips met his.
