Lesson 4: Critters and Dishes
Chapter 4
~Intro
-this spell can be used with almost any creature
-turns creature into goblet
~The Target
-Some restrictions - like size. Target should be no bigger than a shoebox
-Even if the spell worked on large creatures, it would take a LOT of magical power
-Common creatures used are small house pets or pests - rats, birds, mice, lizards, etc
-Do your research on your creature!
~Goblet
-Cup used for drinking
-stem and base
-aka "chalice"
-made of glass, metal, and, in some cases, stone
-Primarily used to drink water, wine, and mead, but can be used to drink anything
-Can still be found in religious ceremonies, at wizarding feasts, and in the modern wine glass.
-Holy Grail: goblet said to give happiness, eternal youth, and an infinite supply of food
-None have found it, unsure what exact dish it is
-Goblet of Fire: goblet used to impartially select champions for the Triwizard Tournament
~The Transformation
-Block:
Spell: Fera Verto
Incantation: Fera Verto (FER-uh VER-toh)
Wand Movement: 3 taps on object, then incantation
Concentration: Medium - visualize all changes that need to occur and all details of desired goblet
Willpower: Medium
-Backfires: Nothing, or prone to partial transformations, complexity varies so be careful and use good judgement
~Assessing Willpower
-2 factors affecting willpower are size and consciousness
-Consciousness is a measurement of the target's mental complexity
-Important: sentience and intelligence
-Sentience: the ability for a thing to feel and experience the world subjectively, base level of consciousness
-Intelligence: the ability for a thing to think, react, and learn, varies widely between species, includes mental processes such as reason and memory
-though mental complexity and physical complexity are two different things, and accounted for in two different ways in transfiguration (willpower and concentration, respectively), the two are typically correlated.
-Level of trust between you and target - this is why it's generally easier for people to cast the spell on a pet
~Origins
-Discovered by Colin Crestfellow, a bit dependent upon firewhiskey
-gifted in TNFG
-wife hid all his goblets
-Colin transfigured his wife's pet ferret into a goblet as payback
-Convenient if you need an extra dish for unexpected guests, dinner parties, or if you find dishes overwhelming
-Flexible nature, can be performed on creatures easily found
~Assignments
-Mandatory Quiz
-Extra Credit Essay on the creature you chose to use Fera Verto on
-Study for midterms next week
