The Sorting Hat

Chapter 5
I quickly became friends with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I found out that Ron has 5 brothers and 1 sister. He’s the 6th born.

We soon arrived and saw a man shouting: “Firs’ years, this way!” “Who is that?” I asked Harry. I didn’t expect him to answer, but he said: ”That’s Hagrid, the gamekeeper.”

We walked to a big lake and Hagrid said: “No more ‘n 4 in a boa’!”

Me, Harry, Ron and Hermione got in a boat. The boat moved by itself, so we don’t need to row the boat.

We first years got off the boat and Hagrid led us up the stairs to a stern-looking professor.

”Firs’ years, Professor McGonagall,” said Hagrid.

“Thank you, Hagrid.” Hagrid left.

“Now, once you enter these doors, the sorting ceremony will begin. Once I call your name, you come up to be sorted into a house: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. The house will be like your family whilst you’re here. Each house has a common room and your dormitory would be there.” Explained McGonagall. She went in to check with the headmaster.

“So what they’re saying on the train is true? Harry Potter has also come to Hogwarts, like Helly,” said Draco. “I’m Malfoy, Draco Malfoy.” Ron sniggered. “Think my name’s funny, eh? Let me see... red hair, freckles, hand-me-down robes, you must be a Weasley.” He turned to Harry. “You have to know, Potter, that some wizarding families are better than others. You don’t want to hang out with the wrong sort.” He stuck out his hand.

”I think I could figure out the wrong sort myself, thanks,” said Harry coldly.

Draco looked very disappointed. Suddenly, McGonagall was behind Draco and said: “The sorting ceremony will begin.”

We walked into the oak doors and found an entire school sitting at their house tables. Then the sorting hat began to sing a song:

"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

The school broke into applause. I clapped among them. Then McGonagall started calling the names. I was too nervous to pay much attention to it and soon, “Malfoy, Draco” was called. I looked up, and saw just in time that the hat shouted: “SLYTHERIN!”

I knew he would be in Slytherin, our whole family was in Slytherin. What would they think if I got into Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw? Or worse, Gryffindor?

Just then the sound of “Potter, Harry” snapped me out of my thoughts.

The hat took a while, and shouted “GRYFFINDOR!”

Oh crap! I was wishing he was in Slytherin.

”Potter, Helly!”

I walked up nervously and McGonagall put the hat on me.

”Also a very hard one.” I heard a small voice say. I suppose it’s the hat.

“Slytherin, Slytherin, please, Slytherin.” I had choose the Malfoys over my brother.

”Opposite than your twin, then. SLYTHERIN!”

I happily skipped to the Slytherin table.
