Rose's Scheme
Chapter 4
I stared at her. "You are insane."
Rose did not laugh. "No, I'm not! Xanthe, this could work!"
I did not know whether to laugh or be shocked. "Us?" I said. "Find the wishing particle or whatever? If it even exists?"
"It does." Rose answered, to my surprise.
"How... how do you know?"
"You know how I... I have a weakness for dares?"
I nodded. Rose would do anything if it was put as a challenge. Her rivals were constantly coming up with rule breaking schemes, trying to get her into trouble. She seldom did, and achieved the dares with ease.
"Well, this time it was Barbara Plankton. She said I had to go into the heart of the forbidden forest."
I raised my eyebrows. "And you did?"
Rose nodded. "Sorry I didn't invite you, but you were in charms."
"Go on."
"Anyway, while I was in there I came across the centaur herd."
"Did they see you?"
"Nope. But I listened -"
"Eavesdropped, you mean."
"Fine, eavesdropped on their conversation. They were talking about the particle!"
I drew in my breath.
"They were asking one centaur if he had hidden it well enough. At first I had no idea what they were talking about, but then when I outwitted Ellis Grumber and found this book I understood everything!"
I shook my head, half exasperatingly, half admiring. "Still, though. Professional magiarchaeologists haven't been able to find it. Why should we?"
Rose bit her lip. "I'm still thinking on that. But you have to believe that we can, Xanthe. Don't you want this?"
Did I want it? Of course I wanted it. But there was another flaw. "What about you?" I said softly. "You've come up with all this. Don't you want the wish?"
Rose shook her head. Firmly. "I only want for you to be happy."
I stared at her. Minutes passed, and then - "I'm in." I said.
