Chapter Nine: Finally!

Lily blinked. She staggered up, and turned to see the time.
'Nine o clock!' she thought. She groaned and went down, and was surprised to see that her mother was smiling brightly at her.
"Congratulations!" she said.
For a moment Lily didn't get what Ginny was talking about. She had been so concentrated on the Scamander twins for months. "For what?" she asked. Then she got it. "It's not the first of September... is it?"
Ginny beamed. "It is! James and Albus are presumably still sleeping. Can you go and wake them? It's Albus's third year and I'm really excited for him." her face fell. "He's having troubles with his dad but... well, I heard them talking about Hogsmeade."
Lily groaned. "I forgot Hogsmeade was in the picture."
Ginny grinned. "Can you imagine my frustration?"
"I have earned respect, more respect, over the years, Mum," said Lily sincerely.
"Yup. As I said, I watched Bill go to Hogwarts when I was what... one?" she shrugged. "Don't quarrel with Dad in the future like your brother, okay?"
"Is Albus having a tough year?"
"I think he is. Remember when Ron learned Albus was best friends with Scorpius Malfoy, he flipped? I think that was influence too... well, I don't really get them."
"Me neither. Mum, I'm worried. What if I make no friends? Hugo and I are still close, I guess, but with Lorcan and Lysander?"
"You'll make friends, Lils, don't worry." said Ginny. "I met Luna, and she turned out to be the best friend ever."
"Thanks."
Lily thought her heart was going to burst. She was standing in front of the Sorting Hat, and now the Sorting Hat was sorting 'Lopez, Sofia!'
She waited. She waited more. Then finally!
"Parks, Leonard!" called the deputy headmistress.
After a moment's thought, the Sorting Hat screamed, "HUFFLEPUFF!"
Lily hoped she would be in Gryffindor. That was the House her parents were in, her grandparents were in, Rose was in! Although Albus didn't make the cut, and after hearing all the horrible things Albus had to endure when being Sorted to Slytherin? She was desperate. She decided to think Gryffindor while the Sorting Hat was... well, Sorting her.
"Potter, Lily!"'
Lily's eyes bulged. Heart racing ferociously, she sat on the three-legged stool. She felt it creak. Or was it her imaginations? Could mirages happen here? Now the stool looked four-legged. She just closed her eyes.
It was taking time for the Hat the Sort. Didn't the Sorting Hat stall when Albus was being Sorted? The students had gossiped that way. Lily thought of Demeter Gardner, her new friend who had been Sorted to Gryffindor.
'Think of her, think of her, think of her! Gryffindor, Gryffindor, Gryffindor!' she screamed inside her head.
She opened her eyes slightly, and saw Lorcan, Lysander, and Hugo all grinning and giving her a thumbs-up. She only smiled at Hugo, and shut her eyes again.
Finally, which felt like an hour, the Sorting Hat shrieked out, "GRYFFINDOR!"
Lily almost let out a shriek of joy. She pulled off the Hat and bounded over to the Gryffindor table. Demeter gestured for Lily to sit next to her. When Lily was properly seated, she asked to Demeter, "I wasn't a Hatstall, was I?"
Demeter shook her head. "Of course not," she said. "You were Sorted within a minute."
"But you were Sorted in like, fifteen seconds!"
Demeter laughed. "It's a funny thing, actually. Weasleys being Gryffindor, Potters being Gryffindor, except for your brother of course... but my house? My mum's family were all in Ravenclaw, and my dad's family were all in Slytherin. My family, particularly my grandma, thought I'd end up in one of them. But I'm in Gryffindor!" she giggled.
"Nice." Lily commented. She sighed. "I'm really relieved I'm not a Hatstall or a Slytherin. Or anything else."
"Hey, Slytherin's fine too."
"But think of all the hate Albus had to endure! I'd never want to experience anything like that!" Lily protested.
Demeter shrugged. "I know," she said. "But you weren't close to being a Hatstall! The Hat has to stall for five minutes for you to become a Hatstall."
"Thanks, Demeter."
"No problem. Oh, hey, my great great uncle Warren was nearly a Hatstall... the Hat sorted for four minutes and fifty eight seconds! I mean..."
Lily looked around at the Great Hall. She spotted Scorpius and Albus talking, looking down, at the Slytherin table. She decided to go and ask them why.
She suddenly felt a rush of pride. She was finally in Hogwarts! Even better, she was Sorted a Gryffindor!
