Chapter Eight: Thank You, But No Thank You

Chapter 8
Lily shut herself in her room and refused to do anything. Ginny was so worried, and she was so grateful the Scamander Twins were here. She thought, 'Maybe they can calm Lily down!', but she didn't imagine they could make problems even worse.
"Lils?" Lorcan called uncertainly.
"Go away." said a muffled voice.
Lorcan gave Lysander an evil eye. Lysander shrugged. "Lily, open up."
"No way." Lily replied. "Just go away."
"We won't. Open up."
Lily opened the door. She was wearing pink linen pajamas, and her hair was bushy, as if she was cramped up in the bed for a long time.
"What?" she snapped.
"We're really sorry, Lily, we really are." Lysander said.
"He's not. He's not saying anything."
"I'm so sorry. I just didn't know what to say."
"So?" Lily asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Please..." Lysander started.
"Forgive us."
Lysander rolled his eyes. "What?"
Lorcan rolled his eyes too. "Fine. Forgive me."
"Me too. I didn't stop him." Lysander added.
Lily gave them a poor smile. "Thanks," she said, and the twins' expression immediately turned bright. "But no thanks."
They drooped. "But..." Lysander stuttered.
"Why not?" Lorcan asked.
"I think," Lily said coldly, "I told you to go."
"You did, but-"
"I said GO!" Lily shrieked.
"No, listen!"
"Go." Her voice was strangely calm. "I might do... well, something bad?" she flicked her finger. "Like... KABOOM? By... accident?"
"It isn't us who changed. It's you." Lorcan said.
"I do think I told you to go."
"Lily! This isn't you. I know you better than you think I do. Please." Lysander begged.
"You don't know me." Lily replied.
She closed her eyes. "I really am having a bad time controlling this." she said. "I do think I'm going to burst or something. You see... I have no power over it, as you quite see. I really don't want to change. I didn't. People change, and I had to follow. It was a natural change. Just because you," she gestured at the twins, "changed and avoided me. Shut me out. Shut yourselves out. Did you know I tried nifflers, hippogriffs, phoenixes and everything to call you out? I tried my best to remain your friend, when others didn't." she gave them a poor smile. "Do you know everybody left you...? Hugo? He left. Of course, we didn't have many friends to begin with, but you only had me, besides yourselves. Well, I'm afraid..." she looked at them in the eye. "You have only your twin to relay on. Pity..." she slammed the door.
"LILY!" Lysander hollered.
"Go away, I told you!" she yelled back, probably between sobs.
She opened the door again, and Lysander could spot tears on her face. "You don't know me, as I don't know you. I don't know anyone, do I? I thought... I thought you two'd remain as my friends. But you didn't. I know your love your dad and wanted to spend time with him, but... you should at least have time to care for the ones who remain. Unlike family, friends... are cruel. They can leave you. I'm sorry, when I shouldn't be." she spat the last words distastefully at closed the door once more. This time, it was locked.
"A, Alohomora!" Lysander cried desperately. It was desperate hope. Maybe... even if he didn't have a wand, the spell would work. But this was no fairy tale. It stayed locked.
It was like a war had happened. Everything was so loud and clear in Lysander's ears. He couldn't budge. What had he done? What was Lily doing? Did she realize what she was doing?
Lorcan tugged on his brother's sleeve. "Let's go," he mumbled. "We're not welcome here."
Lysander didn't argue and cooperated.

Lily pulled the covers over her head once more. She'd bawled and sulked for the last ten minutes, she felt so hollow.
'What have I done? What's happening?' she thought miserably. 'Maybe I am going mad.'
