Chapter Ten: Astoria Malfoy
Chapter 10
*contains spoilers for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*
It was a fine day. Lily was only on her third day, but she felt thrilled. She hadn't gone to see Albus and Scorpius yet, mostly because she felt Rose's icy attitude towards Scorpius Malfoy. She couldn't understand; Rose shared Hermione's wit, but also Ron's personality.
Lily loved Ron, and loved his personality, but she knew the Weasleys were hostile towards the Malfoys, and the Malfoys were hostile towards the Weasleys too.
Lily glanced back and saw Demeter walk towards her.
"Lils!" Demeter cried. "Oh gosh, did you see Albus Potter? He looked han- I mean um... as if his hands were full. Looked depressed."
"Have any idea why?" Lily asked.
Demeter shrugged. "I just saw Malfoy with him. He looked depressed too. That's all I know. Maybe somebody died or something."
Lily sniffed. "I'm going to find out." she announced.
Demeter laughed. "Good luck with that!" she said. "Those two looked ready to rip my throat out when I asked them why they were so depressed."
"Albus wouldn't do that!" said Lily indignantly.
Demeter shrugged. "Maybe I overreacted?" she shrugged again.
"I'm going to go and find them," announced Lily. "Surely he won't claw out his own sister's throat, will he?"
Demeter shrugged. "Maybe not," she replied, "but Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy might. You're not his sister, are you?"
"But Rose Granger-Weasley is my cousin. He won't dare get a bad reputation." said Lily, trying to sound confident. "Don't you think?"
"He likes Rose Weasley?" asked Demeter. "Huh. He doesn't have a chance."
"I do agree," said Lily slowly, "But I don't he'll give up hope."
"Tough."
"Not tough now! It's an advantage."
As Lily strode off to meet Albus Severus Potter and Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy, Demeter looked worriedly behind her. "Watch your back!" she called. "They're not in the best of moods right now! Honestly, if I didn't see Ginny Potter last month, I'd say Albus Potter was mourning her, really."
Lily spotted Albus and Scorpius talking at the end of the Charms corridor.
"Hi, guys!" she said as brightly as she could. She was surprised when both snarled at her.
"What do you want?" snarled Albus.
"Leave us alone!" snarled Scorpius.
"What did I do? Why are you... um... so snarky?"
"Snarky?" said Albus loudly. "Can't you see Scorp's distressed? Go away, Lily. You always poke your nose in somewhere you aren't welcomed."
Did friends always turn their backs when you were at school?
"What? Are you embarrassed of me?" snapped Lily. "I can't believe it! Maybe they were right when they said you two were the Weird Slytherin Bullies."
Albus growled, and Scorpius grimaced. "It's fine, Albus," said Scorpius. "Just tell her. I don't mind. Everyone's going to know it anyway."
Albus narrowed his eyes. Then he pushed past his sister, saying gruffly, "Scorpius's mum died in the summer, alright? Now leave us alone." He stroded down the corridor gruffly, complaining and grumbling, apparently, about nosy sisters like Lily Potter.
Scorpius grimaced again. "Sorry," he muttered, and quickly rushed past Lily.
"If only their personalities were like their..." then she laughed. "No, then they'd be horrid as a troll. None are good looking." although she thought Scorpius was nice looking, and Albus was fine too.
"Who's Malfoy's mum, Demeter? Do you know?" asked Lily breathlessly.
Demeter looked up absently from her book. "Astoria Greengrass," she recited. "She is from one of the Sacred Twenty Eight, her sister is named Daphne Greengrass, and she married Draco Malfoy. She had one son in 2006 - or is it 2005? I don't really remember. Anyway, she..." her eyes widened. "Did she DIE?"
Lily nodded.
"No wonder they were so grumpy!" Demeter cried, and starting talking about Astoria Greengrass, and how her older sister had always told her Scorpius and Astoria were very close.
Lily naturally felt a twinge of pity for Scorpius Malfoy. He'd said sorry for Albus's grumpiness, right?
"Astoria Malfoy... nee Greengrass... I think one of the Sacred Twenty Eights had a curse on them... maybe it's the Greengrasses! Yes... that kind of explains everything..." Demeter looked up sternly at Lily. "Do not mention it to anybody. Get it?"
Lily nodded. "Why, may I ask?" she said cautiously.
"My mum's friend, Anita Wetherall? She was really upset when her sister died. But her friend gossiped it, so... so she had to move. She didn't commit suicide, don't worry. Anita was just really upset with her friend."
"I feel sorry."
"You should, I think. But you don't have to gossip it, okay? He'll reveal it when he's ready."
"Okay."
