Within a few months of your death, you will be contacted by a death consultant. This consultant will be something akin to your personal death "mentor" as you become accustomed to your new state of being.

Do not fear the fact that it will take months; time in the afterlife passes in a unique way.  For instance, in the first stage of death (ie where you are before your death consultant contacts you), time will pass in an uneven but generally quick fashion.  After you are contacted and your consultant has begun to introduce you to all the pathways that lead from death, time will, at first, begin to slow way down, allowing you time to investigate the pathways and choose the one appropriate for you.  After you have chosen your personal pathway (*or one has been chosen for you), time will level out and feel more as it did when you were alive.

Each pathway will be explained, by your death consultant, in detail and in relation to you and how you lived your life in particular. You will be shown examples of where (and how) you can go on from this current state of death, which is a sort of generic limbo, not to be confused with the Limbo of any particular religious faith.

Because time will have slowed down at this point, your death consultant will have plenty of opportunity to help you experience the paths you might take out of "limbo" and to help you keep in touch with your former self.  This is done because it is important for you to remember who you were so that you can go on to become who you must.  Again, this will be covered in later chapters; just be aware that you will have help at all stages of death.
