Pathways - Special Cases Aka Vampires, Werewolves, And Horcruxes, Oh My!

Chapter 10

This is one of many paths you might take--either by choice or destiny--in your afterlife.

Special Cases aka Vampires, Werewolves, and Horcruxes, Oh My!

While some paths pull the recently deceased toward them in various ways: the Poltergeist path pulls people who lived mercurial lives, while Heaven and Hell pull people who lived lives guided by various faiths and the judgments of said faiths, it is still possible to resist those paths if that is what the dead person chooses.  There are, however, exceptions to this rule and they fall within the "Special Cases" heading.

These folks are witches and wizards who meet their deaths in ways that will instantly pull them back into "life."  A person who is bitten by a Vampire, for instance, will die, but will immediately reanimate as a Vampire themselves. They will still have time here in limbo but will not be here long enough, even, to receive a copy of this handbook. They are included in this book just as a means of explaining their cases to other recently deceased people because the rapid appearance and disappearance of a being, as happens in such cases, can be rather startling and disorienting.

Vampires are not the only class of beings considered Special Cases.  Zombies, Mummies, and some Werewolf victims, among others, can all fall under this category as well. Likewise, there is a hypothesis that witches and wizards who have used Horcruxes to unnaturally extend their lives will also appear here briefly if attacked and "killed". The hypothesis states that their length of time here is dependent upon whether their Horcrux brings them right back to life or whether their Horcrux has been destroyed and they are killed for good. It is possible that, like Vampires, they appear here and then disappear rapidly.  As Horcruxes are so rare, however, this hypothesis has not been fully tested or proven.

We hope it never is.
