Chapter 2
"Ron?" Harry turned to Hermione and Ginny. "Hermione...?"
"This jerk thinks that you and Hermione snogged after Potions the other day." Ginny's eyes were ablaze with cold, blue fire. "Lavender told him."
Harry turned to his best friend with a look of pure disbelief. "What the heck are you talking about?"
"Lavender saw it!" Ron snarled back, glancing at his new girlfriend. "And she wouldn't lie to me."
Ginny took a few steps forward again. "I swear, Ronald Weasly." Ginny said quietly, pointing at him threateningly. "I will smack you straight across the face if you don't shut up now."
Ron grabbed his sister's hand, twisting it back. "I'm older than you remember? And stronger. Don't forget all the times..." The rest of his sentence was inaudible to everyone except Ginny, who tried with no avail to punch him with her other hand.
Pain flashed through Ginny's eyes, and Harry immediately unclasped Ron's hand from Ginny's wrist. She clenched her fists, and it seemed like she was about to punch her brother.
"You traitor." Ron whispered, staring at his younger sister.
"Other way around." she muttered.
"Oh, you want to go there?" Ron said angrily, stepping towards Ginny.
"Just STOP!" Hermione screamed. The corridor fell silent. All eyes were on her- but she didn't care. She was oblivious to everything, except for Ron, Ginny, Harry, and Lavender. She took a few steps forward, until she was a few feet away from him. She lifted her trembling hand, and punched him. Straight in the face. They heard a sickening CRACK, and Ron fell back onto the tile floor.
"Won-Won!" Lavender cried, dropping to her knees beside her wounded boyfriend.
Hermione looked back at Ginny-at Harry- at the crowd surrounding the scene. Tears in her eyes, she fled the corridor. Hermione ran out of the building onto the grounds. She ran past Hagrid's hut, down to the Black Lake. It was twilight; the sun reflected on the water, and a breeze, too gentle to be called wind, rustled the face of the mirror in front of her. Hermione wiped her eyes free of tears- she wasn't sad- she didn't have time to be sad. She had a reason, but it wasn't...accurate. She knew that what Lavender had said was false. She knew that everyone, besides Ron, had seen that Lavender had lied just so she would finally get Ron's attention. And now? She had done it. Lavender Brown was now Ron Weasly's girlfriend.
"When's the wedding?" she mumbled to herself, picking up a small stone and throwing it into the water.
