Chapter 10
Hermione mentally told herself to stop blushing. It was Draco Malfoy, for goodness sake. And yet...he cared enough to risk detention to come and see how she was doing. The thought of that spread a warm feeling through her body; she smiled to herself, glancing back out at the lake. She wiped away the last few tears with the back of her hand, letting out a shaky breath.
"Thanks." she whispered to him. "You know, for coming here." Mere words couldn't describe what she felt. Though it was the middle of the night, she still...admired that Draco had come to check on her.
Draco looked at her; he gave a small smile, and nodded slightly. "You're welcome."
They sat down on the marble floor, the room flooded with moonlight. Everything was silent, except for the occasional short talk about the regular school things; quiddich, classes, exams, that sort of thing. Draco didn't bring up the...situation. Hermione remembered that, tucking away the thought in the back of her mind. Draco was understanding enough that he didn't bring up anything that could potentially upset her. And Hermione found that kind of him. As they talked and simply just stayed with each other through the night. At some point, Hermione's eyelids grew heavy. Draco was starting to get tired as well, but...he didn't really want to leave. He didn't know why, but he just didn't. He wanted to stay there- with her. They both fell asleep after an hour or so of silence.
When Draco woke up again, the sun was starting to rise. He looked over at Hermione, who was soundly asleep, her head resting on his shoulder. He just stared for a moment- at her face portraying a serene expression, at her hair flowing down her back in dark brown waves. He glanced out the window across from them; students and teachers alike would start to wake soon. Draco picked up Hermione, careful not to rouse her from her sleep, and laid her down on the cot. He covered her with the blanket, glancing one last time at her face. As he turned around, he paused. Draco looked back at her, quickly leaning over and pressing his lips against her forehead.

He quickly left before anyone would notice, walking back down to the Slytherin common room as quietly as he could. But still- a slight smile didn't leave his face. He just couldn't keep his mind off of what the night had been like. Sure, they had only talked, but Hermione was so easy to converse with. It was like she... understood him. His face reddened as these thoughts traveled through Draco's mind. Did he like her...? Was it possible? One side of him said absolutely not- she was a filthy mudblood, for goodness sake. But the other side...the other side wanted to. The other side smiled at the mention of her name, and couldn't get her image out of his head. Draco felt more compelled to listen to that side. And so, finally, he came to a conclusion.
Yes. He liked Hermione Jean Granger.
