The Potion-Maker'S Daughter

There's a new girl on the Hogwarts Express. She's pretty, kind, and quiet. She clicks with everyone, is generous with her licorice wands, and even tolerates Malfoy. Everyone is thinking, "She's probably a Hufflepuff." Right? WRONG. She's sorted into Slytherin, with the bad kids and the wannabe evils and the just plain thugs. She is secretive about her past, does best in Potions class, and usually sits with the Hufflepuffs. Is Chloe the school's greatest mystery (besides why Dumbledore is so incompetent), or just an enigmatic girl placed in the wrong house?

Chapter 15

A few days later, Chloe was laying in bed and eating more reappearing chocolate when someone opened the door to her room. She looked up, saw Draco, and quickly pulled her quilt over her head. He walked over to her anyway, and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Chloe, it's alright. Hermione-" Here, he took a deep breath, as though just saying it gave him pain- "Hermione isn't Petrified any longer. The girl who was missing- Weasley's sister-" here he curled his lip- "she's resting in the hospital wing now."

Chloe whipped the quilt from her head and stared at him in wide-eyed wonder. "Are you pulling my leg?"

He shook his head and smiled softly. "No. I'm one hundred percent serious. And I'm sorry, you know, for earlier. The other day, when I yelled at you...I didn't mean it at all. I was worried too."

"It's fine. And I'm sorry, too. I acted rather rashly." She looked up at him, mildly embarrassed. "But all's well that ends well. Except for the necklace. I'm afraid that's quite broken." Chloe lifted her pillow and carefully, almost shyly lifted out the broken chain and the slightly tarnished "C". The chain coiled in her hands, looking like a sad little snake in her hands.

Draco lifted his wand and held it to the chain. "Repairo," he said, and a delicate light slowly flowed from his wand and leaped onto the chain. The light connected the links of the chain. The metal grew white hot in her hands, she almost dropped it, a link seemed to grow out of burning, shining light. And then the metal cooled, the light faded, and in her hands was a single, perfect chain.

Draco reached out and gently draped the chain around her neck. As it settled on her collarbone, Chloe felt a weight lift from her shoulders. The familiar heavy chain felt natural, and now she felt comforted, at peace. She was ready to take on the world- or, at least, the task of revealing her big secret. She was finally ready.
