The Potion-Maker'S Daughter

There's a new girl on the Hogwarts Express. She's pretty, kind, and quiet. She clicks with everyone, is generous with her licorice wands, and even tolerates Malfoy. Everyone is thinking, "She's probably a Hufflepuff." Right? WRONG. She's sorted into Slytherin, with the bad kids and the wannabe evils and the just plain thugs. She is secretive about her past, does best in Potions class, and usually sits with the Hufflepuffs. Is Chloe the school's greatest mystery (besides why Dumbledore is so incompetent), or just an enigmatic girl placed in the wrong house?

Rages And Rants

Chapter 14

"Someone's died this time."

Draco was there, by the side of her wing chair in the Common Room. He looked worried, a first for him. Chloe shot up.

"What do you mean, someone's died?"

He was breathing hard. "Another attack. I heard it in the halls. A first year. She's died. Not sure who."

Chloe drew a long, slow breath. "Someone's dead." Her voice rose in pitch with every syllable. "Dead?"

He nodded gravely. "It's going to be alright." He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, but she shook it off and stood up.

"It's not alright!" She could feel everyone in the room staring at her, but she didn't care. "Someone's dead, maybe one of my friends! It's not okay!"

"Calm down, Chloe. People are staring."

She turned on him. "SHOVE OFF!" she shouted, and ran to her room.

Things had been going so well for the past month. There had been no attacks, she had successfully Transfigured a rock into a turtle, and she, Ginny, and Luna had a sleepover in the Common Room with a nice Hufflepuff named Raleigh. But now, everything had to go wrong. Almost choking on a sob, Chloe took off her necklace and threw it across the room. It hit the wall and bounced, and the chain broke. Malachi walked into the room and gazed at her pityingly.

"Bad breakup?" she asked, reapplying her scarlet lipstick.

"No," Chloe said. "I think one of the people who was attacked was my friend. And-" She swallowed. "I've been keeping a big secret from my friends, especially her, and now I wonder if I should have told her. But now it's probably too late..." she lost the thread of her diatribe and just collapsed in defeat.

Malachi gave her an appraising glance. "You know, it's never too late. Your friend will be okay. I know it! Professor Lockhart is down in the Chamber right now, trying to save that girl. And if one of your friends was Petrified, Madam Pomfrey says that the Mandrakes are almost ready. Maybe things won't work out to be perfect. But they'll work out. Just trust me."

And on that note, Malachi drew the curtains around her bed with a whoosh. Apparently, no further council would be necessary.
