The Potion-Maker'S Daughter

There's a new girl on the Hogwarts Express. She's pretty, kind, and quiet. She clicks with everyone, is generous with her licorice wands, and even tolerates Malfoy. Everyone is thinking, "She's probably a Hufflepuff." Right? WRONG. She's sorted into Slytherin, with the bad kids and the wannabe evils and the just plain thugs. She is secretive about her past, does best in Potions class, and usually sits with the Hufflepuffs. Is Chloe the school's greatest mystery (besides why Dumbledore is so incompetent), or just an enigmatic girl placed in the wrong house?

Chapter 1

"There's a girl in our compartment," Ron breathed.

Hermione smacked him on the arm. "Ron! Don't be rude. She has feelings too, you know."

There was, indeed, a girl in the compartment. She was huddled up in the corner, her Hogwarts sweater much too big for her tiny frame.

"Well," Harry said dubiously, "she looks nice."

It was true. The girl did look nice. She had a tiny face, large hazel eyes, and long, shining dark hair. Her mouth quirked up naturally at the corners, and her long lashes batted softly. Her skin was a soft, light tan, and her fingernails were painted a delicate shell pink. One finger twirled her hair, and she stared down at the spotted, thin carpet. As they watched, she lifted her hand to her mouth and bit a large blue licorice wand.

Without warning, she leaped up as though she had sat on a tack. "Hullo," she said brightly, beaming at Harry, Ron, and Hermione. "You can sit in here, if you like. I have food!" She gestured to a large pile of chocolate frogs, pumpkin pasties, and millions of neon-colored licorice wands.

"Excellent," Ron said, making a dive for a particularly large chocolate frog. "I'm Ron, by the way. Ron Weasley."

"And I'm Hermione," said Hermione, smiling and showing her awkwardly sized front teeth.

The girl giggled. "And who's your other friend?" she asked, blinking up at Harry.

Dead silence. Everyone stared at this strange girl, who was blithely sinking her crooked teeth into a pumpkin pasty. The silence finally got to her. "What?" She asked.

Harry smiled kindly. "I'm Harry. Harry Potter. What's your name?"

"Chloe." The girl blushed and looked down at the tall black sneakers on her feet.

"Whassyursernum?" Ron slurred through a mouthful of chocolate. Hermione shot him a disgusted look. He swallowed. "What's your surname?"

"Oh. Um...wow, look at the weather. It's very warm today, don't you think?"

Everyone stared at her dubiously. "What? It is warm out. I wore my sweater, but now I'm boiling."
